Chapter 14 - The Splint Traded for Platinum

On the evening before our wedding, our family gathered in the private dining room of the estate for a quiet, intimate celebration.
There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the terrace.
The people gathered around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:
My mother Clara, looking radiant and completely healthy in a bespoke navy suit, laughing as she shared childhood stories of me with Marco.
Marco, sitting beside Dr. Vance, enjoying a glass of vintage Barolo.
Mrs. Gable, sitting as an honored guest alongside Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance.
And at the head of the table sat Luca Moretti, looking more relaxed and handsome than he had ever appeared in his life.
At eight o'clock, Luca tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.
The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.
Luca stood up, his deep, resonant baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the vaulted room.
“One month ago,” Luca began, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made my heart overflow, “this room was filled with men who believed that power was measured by fear, silence, and broken contracts. I was ready to seal an alliance built on deceit, greed, and stolen bonds.”
He looked directly at me, his smile radiant and full of love.
“Elena Reed brought the truth back to this table. She reminded us that an empire that does not protect the people who carry its silver is an empire built on sand. She taught me that true power is the courage to stand unbroken when everyone else is silent.”
He reached into his breast pocket and produced the fiberglass support sleeve that Dr. Vance had finally removed from my hand that morning.
Beside it, he laid a custom shadowbox crafted from reclaimed cypress from the gallery door, with a brass plaque reading:
THE HAND THAT SAVED OUR HONOR — ELENA REED, 2026.
He turned his dark, soulful eyes toward me.
“Your hand is healed, Elena,” Luca murmured, his voice thick with deep emotion. “And tonight, our house is whole.”
He raised his glass of vintage port high into the air.
“To our family. Whole. Safe. And home.”
Every single person in the room stood to their feet, raising their glasses in a joyous, heartfelt cheer:
“To Donna Elena! To Don Luca! Viva la famiglia!”
My mother wiped tears of pure joy from her cheeks, while Marco raised his glass with a booming shout of celebration.
