Chapter 4 - The Restorer's Broken Ledger

By 1:30 AM, the holding cellar beneath the carriage house was colder than river mud.
Charles Vance—the elite art restorer who had entered the estate with a scalpel—sat zip-tied to a rusted iron chair under the glare of a single, flickering fluorescent tube.
His linen suit was torn at the lapels, his wire-rimmed glasses smashed on the concrete floor, his fingers trembling violently as Marco stood behind him, holding an unlit cigar.
The heavy iron cellar door creaked open.
Luca walked in, his charcoal coat unbuttoned, his presence radiating an aura of lethal, unyielding authority.
Beside him walked me, wearing a warm, dark wool cardigan provided by the housekeeper, my splinted arm supported by a soft black silk sling.
When Charles Vance saw Luca, he began to sob, his breath coming in ragged, pathetic gasps.
“Mr. Moretti... please! I am an academic! A conservator! Miss Bellini told me the estate had authorized the transfer of the family assets! She presented a power of attorney signed by your father’s estate!”
Luca pulled a wooden bench over, sitting down directly across from the trembling restorer.
He rested his forearms on his knees, leaning forward until his face was inches from Vance’s nose.
“You told Vanessa that she was being reckless when she slammed the door on my maid’s hand, Charles.”
Vance froze, his bloodshot eyes darting toward my sling in sheer, unadulterated terror.
“I... I tried to pull the door back! I told her the girl was innocent!”
“You told her she was leaving evidence,” Luca whispered, each syllable dropping like an anvil onto the concrete. “And then you took two hundred thousand dollars to help her forge the federal manifests that were supposed to put me in an execution chamber.”
Vance’s chin shook so violently his teeth clicked together.
“It was Salvatore Bellini! Vanessa’s father!” Vance wept, the confession pouring out in a frantic, desperate torrent. “Salvatore lost sixty million dollars on the Mexican petroleum futures three months ago! The cartel in Tampico gave him until Sunday to settle the debt or they would liquidate his entire family! He needed your mother’s Swiss bonds to clear the balance!”
Luca reached into his vest, pulling out a printed satellite photograph of the Mississippi River near Poydras Street.
“Where are the federal marshals waiting, Charles?”
“The Poydras Street wharf!” Vance blurted, eager to trade everything for his life. “Four tactical vehicles, six federal agents who took half a million dollars in escrow from Salvatore! The tip was set to go live at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, right as your wedding procession stepped out of Saint Louis Cathedral!”
Luca stood up slowly, looking down at the broken restorer with cold, absolute disgust.
“Marco.”
“Yes, boss.”
“Call Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance. Inform him that his cousin Charles is currently in my basement with a signed confession regarding sixty million dollars in international bank fraud.”
Luca looked at the weeping restorer one last time.

“Leave him here in the dark. His cousin will be here with the federal warrants before breakfast.”
