Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Breath Bought in Gold

At 6:30 AM, the storm broke, leaving the Garden District washed in cool, lavender morning light and the sweet scent of wet magnolias.

Inside the sunroom of the east wing, I sat propped against soft velvet cushions, holding a mug of warm chicory tea.

My left hand was immobilised in a clean, lightweight fiberglass cast, the excruciating throbbing replaced by a dull, manageable ache thanks to the nerve block Dr. Vance had administered.

The double French doors swung open, and Luca walked in.

He wore an unbuttoned black dress shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and breathtakingly handsome in the fresh morning light.

In his right hand, he carried a secure tablet.

He sat beside me on the chaise lounge, turning the screen toward my face.

On the live video feed, my mother was sitting up in a sun-drenched private suite at Ochsner Medical Center, breathing comfortably through a high-flow cannula, laughing warmly with two specialist nurses as a fresh tray of fruit and sourdough bread was placed before her.

“The chief of pulmonology completed her initial evaluation an hour ago, Elena,” Luca said softly, his deep baritone rumbling with genuine warmth. “Her oxygen saturation is holding at ninety-eight percent. He has enrolled her in an experimental cellular regeneration protocol that carries an eighty percent success rate for halting tissue fibrosis. Her treatment trust has been funded with five million dollars in an irrevocable account.”

Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude blurred my vision, spilling over my lashes before I could stop them.

“Mr. Moretti... Luca... five million dollars? I could work three lifetimes and never earn a fraction of that—”

“You don't repay family, Elena,” Luca murmured gently, reaching out with his large, calloused hand, his thumb wiping a tear from my cheekbone with breathtaking tenderness.

The touch was so gentle, so completely at odds with his terrifying reputation, that my heart hammered against my ribs.

“You took an iron door to the bone to protect my mother’s name,” he whispered, his gray eyes searching mine with an intensity that took the air from my lungs. “You gave me the truth that saved my life. In this house, that kind of loyalty is answered with an empire.”

Before I could answer, Marco stepped into the room, his expression rigid with operational readiness.

“Boss. Salvatore Bellini’s motorcade has just crossed the perimeter gate. Six armored limousines, twenty-four armed guards. The syndicate delegates have assembled in the grand ballroom for the wedding breakfast.”

Luca stood up smoothly, his gentle expression snapping back into the cold, impenetrable mask of the sovereign.

“Is the display ready in the gallery, Marco?”

“Every document, every transfer receipt, and the sliced canvas. Ready on your word, sir.”

Luca looked down at me, taking my uninjured hand into his.

“It is time, Elena. Come with me to the grand hall. It’s time to show this river who rules the water.”
