Chapter 12 - The Midnight Proposal on Star IslandThe midnight moon hung high and brilliant over the private gardens of the Moretti Chicago estate, casting a soft, silver glow across the sprawling marble pathways and blooming white jasmine bushes.

The chaos of the syndicate wars, the corporate betrayals, and the midnight raids on the offshore terminal felt like a distant, faded memory.
Tonight, the estate was quiet, peaceful, and entirely ours.
I walked slowly along the stone pathway near the edge of the private marina, the gentle evening breeze carrying the clean, salty scent of the lake. Draped over my shoulders, as always, was Luca’s luxurious cashmere wrap.
Soft footsteps approached from behind on the gravel path.
“You’re wandering alone in the dark again,” Luca’s rich, familiar baritone broke the quiet night air.
I turned around with a soft smile as he stepped out from the shadow of the rose arbor. He wasn't wearing his usual corporate suit or tactical vest; instead, he wore a simple black linen shirt with the top buttons open, his dark hair ruffled by the gentle lake breeze.
“I was just thinking about how much my life has changed over the last week,” I said softly, looking out across the sparkling water of the bay. “A few days ago, I was invisible. Now... I feel like I’m standing at the center of the world.”
Luca walked right up to me, closing the distance until I could feel the familiar, comforting warmth of his body radiating against mine.
“You were never invisible to me, Rebecca,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register that made my heart race. “From the very first moment you stood up to Vanessa at that engagement dinner and put Lily’s hearing aid back in... you were the only person I could see.”
He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently cupping my face, tilting my chin upward so my eyes met his piercing emerald gaze.
“Luca...” I whispered, my breath catching in my throat.
Without breaking eye contact, Luca slowly, deliberately dropped to one knee on the cool stone pathway.
My hands flew to my mouth, a sharp gasp escaping my lips as tears instantly welled in my eyes.
Luca reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box. He popped open the lid to reveal a breathtaking, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the moonlight like a captured star.
“Rebecca Hayes,” Luca said, his voice steady, deep, and filled with an absolute, unshakable devotion. “You saved my family’s legacy, you protected my niece, and you brought light into a world built on cold shadows. I don't want to just share my empire with you. I want to share my life, my home, and my heart with you for the rest of our days. Will you marry me?”
The tears spilled over my eyelashes, but a radiant, unstoppable smile broke across my face.
“Yes,” I sobbed softly, my voice trembling with overwhelming joy. “Yes, Luca. A thousand times yes.”
A triumphant, brilliant smile broke across Luca’s handsome face. He slid the dazzling diamond ring onto my finger, stood up swiftly, and swept me up into his arms, spinning me around in a breathless circle before pulling me against his chest and pressing his lips fiercely to mine.

It was a kiss born of fire, survival, and a love deeper than the deepest lake trench.
And as the waves crashed gently against the Chicago docks beneath the silver moonlight, I knew my storms were finally over.
