Chapter 7 - The Dawn of a New DynastyThe first rays of golden morning sunlight broke across the horizon of Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, warm glow over the private marina of the Moretti Chicago estate.

The heavy iron security gates, which had been locked down in absolute terror less than twenty-four hours ago, now swung open smoothly as a steady stream of Moretti Maritime cargo vessels moved out toward the open sea under a renewed banner of absolute authority.

Inside the grand estate living room, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaotic tension of the night before.

My mother sat comfortably on the plush velvet sofa, sipping a cup of hot, steaming tea served on fine silver china by one of the estate housekeepers, while Gabriel sat across from her, excitedly explaining how the regional shipping routes were already being reorganized under our new corporate charter.

I stood near the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows of the terrace, looking out over the sparkling blue water. The heavy cashmere coat Luca had lent me was still draped around my shoulders, its rich fabric keeping the morning chill completely at bay.

Soft footsteps echoed quietly across the marble floor behind me.

“You’re up early,” Luca’s deep, familiar baritone broke the quiet morning air.

I turned around to see him walking toward me. He had removed his heavy black overcoat, now wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up slightly to the elbows, exposing his strong, muscular forearms. The harsh, intimidating edge that defined him as a mafia boss seemed to soften whenever his green eyes locked onto mine.

“I couldn't sleep,” I admitted softly, looking back out toward the harbor. “Everything that happened over the last day... it still feels like an impossible dream. Just yesterday morning, I was kneeling on a dining room floor, wiping wine off Vanessa’s dress.”

Luca stopped right beside me, leaning his shoulder against the glass window frame. He looked down at me, a warm, gentle smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“You were never just a maid, Rebecca,” Luca said quietly, his voice laced with profound sincerity. “From the moment you stood up to Vanessa and put Lily’s hearing aid back in while fifty hostile guests watched, you were the strongest person in that room.”

A warm blush crept up against my cheeks. I looked down at my hands, resting nervously on the edge of the cashmere wrap. “I was just terrified. If I hadn't spoken up, Lily would have been—”

“My niece would have been sent away,” Luca interrupted firmly, his tone turning serious. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently grasping my chin, lifting my face so I had no choice but to meet his piercing emerald gaze. “And my family’s legacy would have been destroyed. You saved everything we built, Rebecca. More importantly... you saved my niece.”

His thumb lightly brushed against my cheekbone, sending a delicious, electric thrill straight through my veins. The distance between us closed naturally, until I could feel the steady, reassuring warmth of his chest radiating against mine.

“And what about you, Luca?” I whispered, my heart fluttering nervously. “What did I save you from?”

Luca’s expression softened completely, the fierce mafia boss vanishing entirely to reveal a man deeply, undeniably captivated.

“You saved me from a life of cold duty, Rebecca,” he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register. “For years, I believed leadership meant isolation—that a man in my position could never trust anyone, let alone open his heart to someone outside our world.” He leaned in closer, his lips brushing softly against the shell of my ear. “Then you walked into my engagement dinner with wine on your apron and fire in your eyes. And suddenly, I couldn't imagine a single day of my life without you in it.”

Before I could answer, the heavy double doors of the living room swung open, and Gabriel walked in whistling a cheerful tune, holding a stack of morning newspapers.

“Good morning, lovebirds!” Gabriel announced with an annoying, playful grin, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw how close we were standing. He immediately held the newspapers up in front of his face like a shield. “Oops! My apologies! I’ll just go check the engine diagnostics on the launch again—take all the time you need!”

Luca let out a low, rumbling laugh, shaking his head at his younger cousin’s antics, while I buried my face in my hands, laughing softly in embarrassment.

Luca gently pulled my hands away from my face, his emerald eyes shining with quiet amusement and undeniable affection.

“Ignore him,” Luca whispered, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss directly to my forehead. “The entire Great Lakes coastline now belongs to the Moretti syndicate, Rebecca Hayes. But the only territory I care about conquering is right here.”

I smiled up at him, my heart entirely his, knowing that whatever stormy seas lay ahead of us, we would navigate them together.
