Chapter 10 - Torn Silk and Broken VowsThree days later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was besieged by hundreds of television cameras, journalists, and federal marshals.

The headline across the Chicago Tribune blared in massive black letters:

RIVER CARTEL CRUMBLES: SALVATORE AND VANESSA BELLINI INDICTED IN HISTORIC SIX-YEAR HOMICIDE CONSPIRACY.

The evidence was unassailable.

With the recovery of Julian Vance’s journal, the ground-penetrating radar scans confirming the burial site beneath the Greenpoint depot, and the encrypted wire-transfer records from Lake County, the federal judge denied bail instantly, remanding both defendants to maximum-security holding facilities in Wisconsin and Indiana to await trial.

Their luxury penthouses on Michigan Avenue, their private yachts in Calumet Harbor, and their offshore shell corporations were completely seized under federal civil asset forfeiture laws.

Seventy-five percent of the liquidated capital—over forty-five million dollars—was transferred directly into the newly chartered Julian Vance Agricultural Foundation, with full oversight granted to the board of trustees.

Luca and I stood on the granite courthouse steps flanked by Daniel and four private security officers.

Luca wore a bespoke black three-piece suit, his hand resting firmly on my lower back as I walked down the steps using my blackthorn cane, my ankle supported by an elegant leather boot that Dr. Harris had custom-fitted for me.

The press shouted questions in a deafening wave:

“Mr. Moretti! Is it true that the Moretti shipping lines have entered full federal compliance?”

“Will your family cooperate with the Department of Justice on the Great Lakes freight reform?”

Luca stepped up to the microphones. The plaza immediately fell dead silent.

“The Moretti family has signed an irrevocable transparency charter with the federal government,” Luca announced, his resonant baritone carrying across the crowded street. “All of our maritime and warehousing divisions are now operating under independent federal audit. We are leaving the shadows of the past behind.”

He paused, looking directly into the lens of the lead network camera.

“My family survived a dangerous betrayal because an honest woman refused to let an innocent mother be silenced. That courage will define the future of our name.”

He stepped back from the microphones, took my hand in his, and led me down the steps toward our waiting town car.

As the car pulled away into the Chicago traffic, I looked at Luca, seeing the immense, crushing weight of weeks of suspicion and syndicate warfare finally lifting from his broad shoulders.

He leaned back against the leather seat, exhaling a long, cleansing breath, and pulled me gently against his side.

“It’s over, Natalie,” he whispered into my hair.

“The good part is just beginning, Luca,” I smiled against his chest.
