Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Long Search EndsThe private rose garden on the south lawn was bathed in the warm, golden light of the late autumn afternoon.

The crisp breeze blew off Lake Michigan, rustling the golden oak leaves and the crimson rose petals that still clung to the bushes.
Luca walked beside me along the gravel path, his hand resting gently against the small of my back.
We stopped beside an antique stone fountain carved with the image of an anchor wrapped in olive branches.
He turned to face me, taking both of my hands into his large, warm palms.
“Two months ago, Natalie,” Luca began, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook my entire being.
“You entered my dining room carrying an arrangement of white roses, limping on a broken ankle, fighting through pain just to pay your brother’s rent. You were surrounded by wealth, arrogance, and cruelty, yet you never let this world tarnish the pure gold of your spirit.”
He looked down at our joined hands, his thumb gently caressing my knuckles.
“You stood in front of twenty-four syndicate bosses and spoke the truth when everyone else was silent. You protected an innocent mother, you brought justice to a murdered boy’s name, and you taught me what family really means.”
He reached into his pocket and produced an antique velvet jeweler’s box lined with white silk.
My breath hitched in my throat. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
“Luca...” I whispered, looking up into his soulful gray eyes.
He didn't hesitate.
He dropped onto one knee on the flagstone path, surrounded by the blooming roses and the gentle murmur of the fountain.
He opened the box.
Resting inside was not a commercial, modern diamond bought from a retail catalog.
Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, five-carat cushion-cut royal blue sapphire cradled by two delicate leaves carved from white gold—the historic engagement ring of his mother, Elena Moretti, which had been locked in the family vault for twenty years, waiting for the woman who would bring honor back to their name.
“Natalie Brooks,” Luca said, his voice ringing with pure, unyielding devotion.
“Will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my heart?”
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over my lashes, hot against my cheeks.
“Yes,” I choked out through my laughter, throwing my arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Luca! A thousand times yes!”
Luca swept me up into his arms, lifting me off the flagstones, spinning me beneath the vast autumn sky before bringing his lips down onto mine in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed our destiny forever.

He slid the sapphire ring onto my finger.
It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the Chicago sun.
