Chapter 14 - White Roses Without ThornsOn the evening before our wedding, Luca and I hosted an intimate family dinner in the grand dining room of the estate.

The mahogany table was covered with a simple, elegant white linen cloth, illuminated by soft candlelight and decorated with fresh white roses and fragrant sprigs of rosemary from Mrs. Vance’s nursery.
There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the corners.
The people seated around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:
Mrs. Martha Vance, sitting tall and proud in an elegant lavender silk dress, laughing as she shared childhood stories of Julian with my brother Mark.
Mark, sitting beside Daniel, looking sharp and proud in his new bespoke suit.
Dr. Harris and Mrs. Carter, sitting as honored guests alongside Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance and senior union leaders from the docks.
And at the head of the table sat Luca, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him.
At eight o'clock, Luca tapped his wine glass with a silver dessert spoon.
The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.
Luca stood up, his deep, resonant baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the vaulted room.
“Two months ago,” Luca began, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made my heart overflow, “this room was filled with twenty-four men who believed that power was measured by fear, silence, and broken contracts. We were ready to seal an alliance built on murder and stolen land.”
He looked directly at me, his smile radiant and full of love.
“Natalie Brooks brought the truth back to this table. She reminded us that a house that does not protect the people who sweep its floors is a house built on sand. She taught me that true power is the courage to stand unbroken when everyone else is silent.”
He raised his glass of Barolo high into the air.
“To Julian Vance. To Martha. And to Natalie, who brought the white roses home without thorns.”
Every single person in the room stood to their feet, raising their glasses in a joyous, heartfelt cheer:
“To Natalie! To Luca! Viva la famiglia!”

Mrs. Vance wiped tears of pure joy from her cheeks, while Mark let out a booming cheer of celebration.
Luca pulled me gently to my feet, his arms wrapping around me, his lips meeting mine in a tender, lingering kiss that sealed our family's redemption forever.
