Chapter 15 - The Only Queen In His Kingdom (The End)

================================================================================
The bells of St. Michael’s Cathedral chimed across the city, their joyous, resonant tones echoing from the harbor to the mountain peaks.
Six months after blood had stained the marble floor of the sanctuary, the cathedral had been transformed into a kingdom of light, silk, and pure white lilies. Thousands of candles flickered in the gilded sconces. The stone walls were draped in ivory satin, and the great organ sang with triumphant, soaring chords that shook the very foundations of the earth.
At the entrance to the nave, the massive double doors swung open.
A breathless hush fell over the three hundred elite guests seated in the pews. Senators, industrial titans, port union leaders, and former underbosses turned as one to watch the entrance.
My mother, dressed in an elegant lavender silk gown, kissed my cheek with tears in her eyes and took her seat in the front row.
I took a deep, steady breath, holding my bouquet of white roses and Sicilian orange blossoms.
My wedding gown was a masterpiece of royal lace and shimmering silk, with long illusion sleeves, a sweetheart neckline, and a cathedral train that swept fifteen feet behind me across the rose-petal-strewn aisle. Upon my head rested a delicate platinum tiara encrusted with sapphires and diamonds—the crown of the Moretti matriarchs.
I looked down the long, sunlit aisle.
Standing at the altar, waiting for me, was Dante Moretti.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt, his broad shoulders commanding the entire space. His dark hair was styled back, his chiseled jaw set with absolute pride.
The moment his eyes met mine, the air left the room.
I saw no mob boss standing at that altar. I saw no sovereign of shadows.
I saw the man who had dried my tears when I was invisible to the rest of the world. I saw the protector who had shielded my dying mother, who had avenged my father’s murder, and who had laid an empire at my feet simply to see me smile.
I began to walk.
Step by step, my heels clicked softly against the white marble. Every ghost of poverty, every cold night in hospital hallways, every cruel insult from Vanessa Bennett vanished into the bright light streaming through the stained-glass windows.
When I reached the altar steps, Dante stepped down to meet me.
He didn't wait for the priest's instruction. He reached out and took both of my trembling hands into his large, warm palms. His gaze swept over my face with an adoration so fierce and absolute that it brought a collective, emotional sigh from the women in the front pews.
"You took my breath away the first night you walked into my house," Dante whispered, his voice thick with emotion, loud enough only for me to hear. "And you will keep it until my last day on this earth."
"I am never giving it back," I answered with a radiant smile.
The Archbishop raised his hands, blessing the rings.
"Do you, Dante Moretti, take Elena Carter to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?"
Dante’s eyes never left mine for a single heartbeat.
"I do," Dante answered, his deep baritone ringing clear and powerful throughout the sacred cathedral.
He took the gold wedding band, set with a channel of midnight sapphires, and slid it onto my fourth finger beside the engagement ring.
"And do you, Elena Carter, take Dante Moretti to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love, honor, and cherish, through all storms and trials, until death do you part?"
I looked into the dark, faithful eyes of the man who had redeemed my world.
"I do," I spoke with every ounce of strength and devotion in my heart.
I took the solid platinum band and slid it onto Dante’s finger, sealing our lives and our destinies together forever.
"By the power vested in me," the Archbishop declared with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Dante didn't hesitate.
He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, lifted me slightly against his chest, and pulled me into a kiss that sealed every promise we had ever whispered in the dark.
The cathedral erupted into thunderous, standing applause. Rose petals rained down from the choir balconies, showering us in white and gold. My mother wept tears of sheer happiness in the front row, and even the stern, stoic Luca wiped a tear from his eye beside the altar.
Dante pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his breathing ragged, his lips curved into the most brilliant, triumphant smile I had ever seen.
"Mrs. Moretti," he murmured, his thumb stroking my cheek.
"Mr. Moretti," I replied, my heart overflowing with peace.
He turned toward the grand congregation, took my left hand in his, and raised our intertwined fingers high into the air.
Together, side by side as equals, we walked down the aisle through the shower of petals and cheers, stepping out of the cathedral into the brilliant, golden sunlight of a brand new day.
The maid who had once stood weeping in the shadows of a ballroom was gone.
I was Elena Moretti.
And beside the man who loved me, I was the only Queen this kingdom would ever know.
