Chapter 3 - The Cold Knife Behind A Velvet Smile

================================================================================
The third-floor private study was a room staff members were forbidden to enter without direct authorization. Its towering walls were lined with thousands of leather-bound books, dark walnut paneling, and an immense stone fireplace that stood cold tonight. Behind the massive mahogany desk sat an antique green-shaded banker’s lamp, casting a lonely, muted glow over scattered ledgers and a closed laptop.
I stood in the center of the Persian rug, clutching my elbows, shivering despite the warmth of the room.
My mind was spinning in violent circles. *Marcus is a liar,* I told myself fiercely. *He’s a spoiled, vicious sociopath trying to play mind games to protect his sister's engagement.*
Yet, deep inside my chest, a dark, suffocating doubt began to take root.
Why had Dante hired me? Six months ago, I had applied for a simple administrative post at one of Moretti’s public commercial branches. Two days later, a black town car had arrived at my cramped apartment, and Dante’s personal lawyer had offered me a residential position at the estate—with a salary triple what I made anywhere else, and full medical coverage for my mother’s oncology treatments.
I had thought it was a miracle. A bizarre stroke of luck from God.
*What if it wasn't luck? What if it was guilt?*
The heavy oak doors swung open without a sound.
Dante stepped into the study. He had removed his black dinner jacket, draping it over the back of an armchair. His crisp white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his powerful forearms and the dark, intricate ink of a roaring lion wrapped in thorns curling around his left wrist.
He closed the door behind him and locked it with a sharp, metallic click.
"Elena," he said, his voice softer now that the audience was gone.
I couldn't look at him. Every time I looked at his chiseled jaw, the faint scar near his left temple, and the deep, haunting intensity of his eyes, I saw two completely different men: the protector who stayed up with me in the kitchen, and the ruthless mobster who may have crushed my father into an early grave.
"Why did you bring me here, Mr. Moretti?" I asked, deliberately returning to the formal address.
A shadow passed over his face. He walked slowly toward the bar cart in the corner, pouring himself two fingers of amber scotch. "Don't call me that. Not in this room."
"You have guests downstairs," I pressed on, my voice cracking slightly. "Your fiancée is waiting for you. Her father is waiting for you. You humiliated them in front of the most powerful people in the city."
Dante took a slow sip of the scotch, watching me over the rim of the glass. "I don't care about the Bennetts."
"Then why did you put a ring on her finger?!" The question tore out of my throat before I could stop it. The desperation, the jealousy, the sheer agony of the last few weeks spilled over like boiling water. "Why parade her in front of everyone? Why tell the world she’s the one who gets to stand beside you, while I—while I hide in the pantry like a coward?!"
Dante set his glass down on the desk with a heavy thud. In three long strides, he crossed the space between us, stopping mere inches away.
"Look at me, Elena," he commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register.
I pressed my lips together and kept my eyes fixed firmly on the collar of his shirt.
He reached up, his large, warm hand cupping the side of my neck. His thumb rested directly over my racing pulse point, feeling the frantic, terrified rhythm of my heart. The heat of his touch was dizzying, making my knees feel dangerously weak.
"I said look at me."
Slowly, reluctantly, I raised my eyes to meet his.
There was no cruelty in his gaze. Only a burning, tempestuous storm of possessiveness and unyielding resolve.
"That engagement is a contract," Dante stated bluntly, his eyes never leaving mine. "A temporary, disposable piece of paper designed to force Richard Bennett to move his offshore assets into accounts my men control. By next month, the Bennett family will have surrendered every piece of leverage they have held over this city for the last twenty years."
I stared at him, my breath catching. "You... you aren't going to marry her?"
"I would burn this entire estate to the ground before I let Vanessa Bennett take my name," Dante whispered, his face descending until his lips were a breath away from my ear. "The only reason that woman is breathing the air in my ballroom tonight is because her father holds something that belongs to me."
He paused, his breath warm against my neck, sending electric shocks rippling across my skin.
"And as for you..." Dante murmurs, his hand sliding slowly up into my hair, tilting my head back, "did you really think I could let another man see you cry and not want to rip his throat out?"
My heart stopped. For a fleeting second, the sheer power of his words made me want to collapse into his chest, to wrap my arms around his neck and forget the entire world.
Then, Marcus Bennett’s sneering voice echoed through my memory.
*He keeps trophies of every empire he conquered... You aren't his redemption, Elena. You're his collateral damage.*
I gasped, bracing both hands against Dante’s broad chest and shoving him backward with all the strength I possessed.
He didn't stumble, but the sudden rejection made his eyes widen with shock. His hands fell to his sides, his jaw tightening into rigid stone.
"Elena?" he asked, genuine confusion lacing his deep voice.
"Who destroyed Carter Logistics?"
The words fell into the air like shattered glass.
The color drained from Dante’s face so completely that he looked like a statue carved of white marble. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an abyss of dark, suffocating guilt.
He didn't speak. He didn't deny it.
He just stood there, looking at me as if I had driven a poisoned blade straight through his heart.
May you like
And in that agonizing silence, my soul broke in two.
