Chapter 5 - The Glass Smashes On The Marble Floor

================================================================================

I stood trembling within the circle of Dante’s arms, listening to the heavy, steady thud of his heart against my ear.

For ten years, I had believed my family was broken by bad luck, economic failure, and tragic illness. Now, in the span of ten minutes, the entire architecture of my reality had been dismantled. My father had been murdered. My mother’s chronic decline had been triggered by grief and poverty manufactured by the smiling billionaire currently drinking champagne in the ballroom below.

And the woman who had just sneered at me, flaunting her ten-carat engagement ring, was the daughter of the butcher who took my father’s life.

A cold, unfamiliar rage began to replace the despair in my chest.

I pulled back slowly. Dante didn't force me to stay, but his hands lingered gently at my waist, his dark eyes searching my face for any sign that I was about to break completely.

"The engagement," I said, my voice surprisingly steady, hardened by a newfound hatred. "You told me it was to drain Richard Bennett’s offshore assets."

"It is," Dante replied, his jaw tightening into steel. "Bennett owes forty million dollars in unpaid port tariffs and illicit debt to our syndicate. He proposed the marriage to merge our family trusts, believing it would dissolve his debt. Instead, the contract he signed yesterday afternoon legally forfeits every single Bennett warehouse, dockyard, and private holding company to Moretti Enterprises if the union is terminated under a breach of contract."

I looked at him, realizing the terrifying depth of his calculated game. "What kind of breach?"

A dark, lethal smirk curved the corner of Dante’s lips. "Public humiliation. Infidelity. Or an unprovoked assault on a member of my household."

Before I could ask him what that meant, a loud, sharp crash shattered the silence downstairs.

Screams echoed up the marble stairwell, followed by the sound of breaking crystal and an enraged woman's shriek.

Dante didn't look surprised. He looked like an executioner whose trap had just snapped shut.

"Stay behind me," he ordered, his hand instinctively dropping to the small of my back as he led me toward the study door.

We descended the grand curved staircase side by side. As we turned the landing, the entire ballroom came into view. The string quartet had completely abandoned their instruments. The high-society guests had pressed themselves against the perimeter walls, leaving a massive, open circle in the center of the room.

In the middle of the floor, standing over the shattered remnants of an ice sculpture, was Vanessa Bennett.

Her hair was slightly disheveled, her cheeks flushed with blind, drunken fury. Her brother Marcus stood beside her, looking unnerved, while their father Richard was frantically whispering into a cell phone in the corner.

On the floor at Vanessa’s feet was my best friend and fellow maid, Maria, clutching her bruised arm, weeping quietly.

"Where is she?!" Vanessa screamed, looking around the ballroom like a rabid animal. "Where is that pathetic, thieving little bitch?!"

"Vanessa!" Richard hissed, lowering his phone, his face pale as chalk. "Keep your voice down! The board members are watching!"

"I don't care!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a trembling, diamond-clad finger toward the shattered glass. "The Carter girl stole my diamond bracelet from my suite! I left it on the vanity before the party, and now it's gone! She’s a thief, just like her bankrupt father was!"

Every whisper in the room vanished the second Dante’s heavy leather shoes hit the final marble step.

The crowd parted instantly.

Dante didn't rush. He walked with terrifying, deliberate grace, his presence commanding absolute obedience. But this time, he didn't leave me in the shadows. He reached out with his left hand, intertwining his fingers with mine, pulling me gently to walk directly at his side.

The sight of the Mafia Don holding the hand of a maid in front of two hundred elite guests sent a violent shockwave through the room.

Vanessa froze. Her eyes dropped to our intertwined fingers, and an expression of pure, murderous rage twisted her features.

"Dante!" she cried out, her voice cracking with indignation. "What are you doing?! That little peasant stole from me! She took my Cartier diamond bracelet!"

"Did she?" Dante asked. His tone was deceptively calm, like the surface of a frozen lake.

"Yes! Look at her! She’s wearing a uniform, but she thinks she can look at you like she owns you! Marcus searched the staff quarters and found it in her locker!"

Marcus stepped forward, holding up a sparkling diamond bracelet, looking smug and triumphant. "Found it under her extra apron, Dante. Standard protocol for thievery. Call the police."

Dante stopped ten feet away from the Bennett family. He didn't drop my hand. If anything, his grip tightened, warm and protective, anchoring me to the earth.

"That’s very interesting, Marcus," Dante said smoothly, tilting his head toward the surveillance cameras mounted discreetly along the gilded moldings of the ceiling. "Especially considering my personal security team upgraded every corridor and staff room with military-grade biometrics two months ago."

Marcus’s smirk instantly vanished.

"Let’s review the footage together, shall we?" Dante continued, his dark voice carrying to every corner of the room. "Let’s look at the camera feed from seven-fifteen this evening, which clearly shows you, Marcus, using a bypassed master key to enter the staff quarters, walking straight to Elena’s locker, and planting that exact bracelet inside."

Murmurs of shock and disgust broke out among the guests.

"That’s a lie!" Marcus yelled, sweat suddenly beading across his forehead. "You're taking the word of a servant over—"

*SMACK.*

The sound of Dante’s right fist striking Marcus Bennett’s jaw sounded like a baseball bat hitting an oak tree.

Marcus flew backward, crashing into a table loaded with champagne flutes, sending hundreds of glass stems exploding across the marble floor. He groaned, clutching his bloody face, completely incapacitated.

Vanessa screamed in horror. Richard dropped his phone, trembling with rage. "Moretti! You've lost your mind! We had a deal! We had an alliance!"

"The deal is dead, Richard," Dante said coldly, taking a pristine white handkerchief from his pocket and wiping a drop of Marcus's blood from his knuckles. "Clause fourteen of our prenuptial agreement: Any intentional, fabricated slander or physical intimidation against members of the Moretti household results in the immediate dissolution of the contract."

Dante tossed the stained cloth onto Marcus’s groaning body.

"As of thirty seconds ago," Dante announced, his voice echoing with ruthless authority, "Moretti Enterprises has initiated the full, unconditional foreclosure of all Bennett Industrial assets. Your shipping docks belong to me. Your family trusts belong to me. By sunrise tomorrow, the Bennett family won't have enough money left to buy a bus ticket out of this city."

Richard Bennett looked like a man having a stroke. He grasped at his chest, his mouth working wordlessly as two of Dante’s towering security guards stepped forward, grabbing the billionaire by both arms.

Vanessa stood frozen in horror, tears of absolute humiliation streaming down her face. "Dante... please. You can't do this to me. Who is going to be your wife?! Who will run this empire with you?!"

Dante turned slowly toward me.

In front of the entire high-society elite, in front of the cameras, the politicians, and the ruined Bennett family, Dante Moretti dropped down onto one knee.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Inside rested a ring carved from a single, flawless midnight-blue sapphire, encircled by a halo of blinding diamonds—an heirloom that had belonged to the Moretti family matriarchs for four generations.

"Elena Carter," Dante spoke, his voice ringing out with raw, unconditional passion, "for ten years, my family owed yours a debt that money can never repay. But tonight, I am not asking for your forgiveness as a boss. I am begging for your heart as a man."

He looked up at me, his eyes burning with devotion.

"Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the only Queen this city will ever know?"

A collective, breathless hush fell over the room.

My heart hammered in my throat. I looked down at the man kneeling before me—the ruthless king who had brought an entire empire to its knees just to wipe away my tears.

And with a trembling smile, I opened my lips to answer.
