Chapter 7 - What The Safe In The Study Kept Hidden

================================================================================
The black armored Maybach tore through the empty, rain-slicked streets of the city like a guided missile. Outside the tinted bulletproof windows, neon signs smeared into streaks of red and amber against the dark pavement.
In the front seat, Dante’s chief of security, Luca, drove with two hands locked on the wheel, while another armed operative sat shotgun, monitoring three separate encrypted tablets displaying live surveillance feeds.
I sat in the back with Dante. He had changed into a dark tactical sweater and leather gloves, his black dinner jacket discarded back at the mansion. A customized 9mm pistol rested in a leather holster under his left arm, entirely visible and entirely lethal.
I looked down at my hands. I was still wearing the black uniform dress of a maid, but over my shoulders was Dante’s heavy cashmere coat, carrying the scent of cedarwood and faint gunpowder. On my left finger, the midnight-blue sapphire reflected the streetlamps flashing overhead.
"Why bring me along?" I asked, breaking the silence that had filled the vehicle for the last ten miles. "If Richard Bennett has armed men at the archives, I will only be a liability to you."
Dante reached across the leather console, taking my hand in his gloved grip. His fingers were solid, steady, giving me a sense of stability when everything around me was crumbling.
"Because the documents stored in the private archive don't belong to the city, Elena," Dante explained quietly. "They belong to your father."
I looked at him sharply. "My father?"
"David Carter knew he was going to be targeted," Dante said, his voice grim. "He wasn't stupid. Three days before he was admitted to the hospital with supposed food poisoning, he deposited a safety deposit box into the municipal land registry vault under a coded alias. That box contains the original manifests—the ones with Richard Bennett’s handwritten signatures authorizing the weapons transfers through Carter Logistics."
Luca spoke up from the front, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror. "Boss, municipal grid cameras show two black SUVs parked in the service alley behind the City Hall archives. Bennett’s private security detail is already inside. The alarms have been disabled from within."
Dante didn't flinch. "How many men?"
"At least eight. Heavily armed."
"Understood," Dante replied with chilling calm. He tapped the holster under his arm. "Clear the perimeter quietly. Richard Bennett dies tonight only if he reaches for a weapon. I want him alive long enough to sign the confession over to the federal attorney."
"Yes, sir."
The car turned sharply into a narrow alley behind the granite monolith of the municipal records building. Rain poured from broken gutters, hammering against the roof of the Maybach.
Luca killed the headlights. The heavy vehicle rolled to an absolute stop behind a dumpster. Through the rain-streaked windshield, I saw two men in dark trench coats holding submachine guns stationed outside a reinforced metal service door.
"Stay down in the car with Miller," Dante commanded, his hand briefly lingering at the back of my neck, his dark eyes fierce and protective. "Keep the doors locked. I will be back in ten minutes with your father’s files."
"Dante, wait," I whispered, my heart leaping into my throat.
The reality of who he was—and the deadly violence he commanded—struck me with terrifying clarity. He wasn't just a wealthy man with an elegant manor. He was a commander stepping into a combat zone.
"Be careful," I said, unable to hide the terror in my voice.
A faint, tender smile softened the harsh angles of Dante’s face. He leaned down and pressed a firm, lingering kiss against my forehead.
"Nothing in this city can kill me, Elena," he murmured against my skin. "Not when I have a reason to come back."
He opened the heavy armored door and slipped into the rainy darkness like a ghost.
Luca followed immediately behind him, drawing a silenced firearm from his shoulder holster.
Inside the Maybach, the guard named Miller locked the doors with a heavy metallic click and unholstered his own weapon, keeping his eyes glued to the monitors.
I sat with my breath caught in my throat, staring into the dark alley.
Two minutes passed.
Suddenly, through the pouring rain, I saw the two trench-coated guards outside the service door collapse into the puddles without a sound. Dante and Luca appeared from the shadows, stepping over the fallen men, and vanished through the open metal door into the records building.
The silence that followed was agonizing.
Five minutes. Six minutes.
My fingers clutched Dante’s cashmere coat around me, my pulse thudding against my eardrums like a war drum. *Please be safe,* I prayed silently. *Please don't let this night end in blood.*
Suddenly, the screen on Miller’s tablet flickered with static.
"What the hell?" Miller muttered, leaning forward, tapping the glass aggressively. "Internal security cameras just went dark. Grid failure on the third floor."
Before Miller could reach for his radio, the rear passenger window beside my head exploded into a thousand tiny spiderweb fractures.
A heavy bullet had struck the reinforced glass.
"Sniper!" Miller yelled, spinning in his seat, drawing his weapon. "Stay down, Miss Carter!"
Before Miller could fire through the windshield, the alley doors behind us swung open. A heavy steel ram mounted on the front of an unmarked pickup truck slammed directly into the side of our Maybach with a deafening, bone-crushing crash.
The impact threw me violently across the leather seat. My head slammed against the opposite door frame, stars bursting across my vision.
Through the ringing in my ears, I heard Miller screaming, followed by the muffled, rapid cracks of automatic gunfire. The driver-side window shattered inward, raining crystalline glass across the front console. Miller’s body slumped forward over the steering wheel, completely still.
Dazed, blood dripping warm down my temple, I scrambled toward the floorboards.
The damaged rear door was violently wrenched open from the outside.
A hand clad in black leather reached inside, grabbing my hair with brutal force and dragging me out of the vehicle into the freezing downpour.
I screamed, kicking out with my legs, my shoes splashing into the icy puddles.
"Shut your mouth, little maid," a venomous voice spat above me.
I blinked away the blood and rain stinging my eyes.
Standing above me, holding a silver revolver aimed directly at my forehead, was Marcus Bennett. His face was covered in white bandages where Dante had broken his jaw, his swollen eyes blazing with murderous insanity.

"You really thought my father and I would just roll over and let Dante Moretti take our empire?" Marcus sneered, blood seeping through his bandages as he grinned. "You're going to be the bait that brings the great Mafia King to his knees."
