Chapter 6 - Bloodlines and Broken Contracts

================================================================================
The room felt entirely devoid of oxygen.
Two hundred pairs of eyes remained glued to the sight of Dante Moretti—the ruthless, untouchable sovereign of the underworld and corporate aristocracy alike—resting on one knee before an orphaned housemaid. The midnight-blue sapphire gleamed inside its black velvet bed, flashing like a piece of the night sky trapped within a cage of pristine diamonds.
My heart pounded so hard I could hear it roaring in my ears. Beside us, on the cold marble floor, Marcus Bennett was still groaning through a mouthful of blood and broken teeth. Vanessa Bennett was hyperventilating, her painted face twisted into a mask of pure, hideous hatred.
"Dante... please," Vanessa rasped, her hands shaking so violently that her silver clutch clattered to the floor. "She’s a servant. Her father was a bankrupt criminal who couldn't even keep his delivery trucks running! You're going to throw away our families' legacy for a stray?!"
Dante didn't turn his head. He didn't even blink. His entire focus remained locked onto my face, waiting for my answer with an intensity that made the floorboards beneath my feet feel unsteady.
"Elena," he whispered, his voice steady yet filled with an undercurrent of raw vulnerability that only I was close enough to hear. "Say yes. Let me spend the rest of my life making right what this city stole from you."
I looked into his dark, storm-colored eyes. I saw no deceit there. I saw the man who had sat with me in the dark kitchen at three in the morning when the news of my mother's illness felt too heavy to bear. I saw the protector who had shielded me from the Bennett family's murderous reach for six months without ever demanding my gratitude in return.
And yet, the ghost of my father’s face flickered through my thoughts. David Carter had been an honest man whose life was snuffed out like a candle because he refused to let criminals use his trucks for illegal weapons.
Could I wear the ring of the syndicate that had enabled his downfall, even if Dante himself was innocent of the crime?
"Dante," I breathed, my hand trembling as I reached toward him. "If I take this ring, we are not just announcing an engagement. We are starting a war."
A razor-thin, predatory smile touched the corners of Dante’s lips. It was the smile of a king who had already planned every move on the board three steps ahead of his enemies.
"Let them come, Elena," he murmured. "I built this empire from ash and iron. I will tear it down with my bare hands before I allow anyone in this room to harm a single hair on your head."
Slowly, deliberately, I extended my left hand.
Dante slipped the sapphire ring onto my fourth finger. It was cool against my skin at first, but within seconds, it absorbed the heat of my pulse. The fit was flawless, as if the ring had been forged specifically for me generations before I was even born.
Dante rose to his full height. His hand closed firmly around mine, lifting our intertwined fingers into the air for every member of high society to see.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Dante announced, his deep baritone cutting through the heavy ballroom like a blade slicing through silk. "The engagement between Moretti Enterprises and the Bennett family is officially terminated due to an intentional breach of conduct and criminal defamation. My future wife, and the future sole matriarch of the Moretti syndicate, is Elena Carter."
Gasps erupted like a chain reaction. Champagne glasses rattled. Several older board members looked as if they were going to faint.
"You're dead, Moretti!" Richard Bennett bellowed, breaking free from one of the security guards for a brief second, his face purple with apoplexy. "You think you can take my shipping lanes?! You think you can steal my docks and humiliate my daughter in front of the entire eastern seaboard?! The Council will never ratify this! The Five Families will drown you in your own harbor!"
Dante didn't flinch. He signaled with a brief nod of his chin.
Four additional guards, dressed in tactical black with earpieces humming, moved into the center of the ballroom. They gripped Richard Bennett by the shoulders, while two others hoisted the bleeding Marcus to his feet.
"Remove them from the property," Dante ordered coldly. "If Richard or Marcus Bennett are seen within five hundred yards of this estate, or within two miles of the St. Jude Oncology Pavilion where Mrs. Carter is receiving treatment, consider it an act of active war and shoot on sight."
"Dante! No! You can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked as a guard took her firmly by the elbow. She fought against the grip, her Valentino gown tearing at the shoulder seam, exposing her pale skin. Her eyes, filled with venomous tears, locked onto mine. "You hear me, Elena Carter?! You will pay for this! You will choke on that sapphire before you ever make it down the aisle!"
I didn't look away from her. I held her furious gaze until the heavy double doors of the mansion swung shut, swallowing the screaming of the disgraced Bennett family into the chilly autumn night.
The remaining guests stood in stunned, frozen silence. Nobody dared speak. Nobody dared leave without permission.
Dante turned to the crowd, his aristocratic demeanor snapping back into place as if nothing more disruptive than a broken plate had occurred.
"The gala is concluded," Dante said smoothly. "My drivers will escort each of you safely to your vehicles. Have a pleasant evening."
Within fifteen minutes, the great ballroom was emptied. The string quartet had packed their cellos in hurried terror, the waiters had vanished into the service wings, and the only sound remaining was the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the foyer.
I stood alone in the vast, empty ballroom with Dante.
The weight of the sapphire ring felt suddenly enormous on my hand. I looked down at the dark blue jewel, feeling a dizzying sensation of vertigo wash over me.
"You planned this," I said quietly, looking up at him. "The biometrics in the staff quarters. The clause in the contract. You knew Marcus would try to frame me tonight."
Dante didn't deny it. He took off his cufflink, placing it on a nearby table, and stepped closer to me.
"Marcus Bennett is as predictable as a rabid dog," Dante said softly. "His father’s debts were coming due. Marcus knew that if Vanessa didn't secure the Moretti name tonight, their family was finished. He wanted you discredited and removed because he knew you were the only person in this house I looked at with soft eyes."
He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping the side of my face. His thumb brushed over my lower lip, his dark eyes searching mine with an intensity that made my knees weak.
"I didn't use you as bait, Elena," he whispered fiercely. "I used their own malice against them to sever the contract legally. But the proposal... the ring... that was never part of a business calculation."
"Then what was it?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the hum of the cooling chandeliers.
"It was the truth," Dante murmured, leaning down until his lips hovered less than an inch from mine. "I have loved you since the night you stood up to me in the library four months ago and told me my tea was too bitter because I was too stubborn to let it steep."
Before I could answer, before his lips could touch mine, a sharp chime cut through the stillness.
Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out his encrypted satellite phone. He glanced at the glowing screen, and the warmth on his face instantly vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating expression of a mob boss facing an imminent threat.
"What is it?" I asked, my pulse quickening with alarm.
Dante looked up at me, his jaw clenched tight as iron.
"Richard Bennett didn't go home," Dante said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "He went straight to the private archives at City Hall. He’s trying to destroy the evidence before our federal raid tomorrow morning."
Dante pocketed the phone and gripped my hand.

"We leave in five minutes. And you're coming with me."
