Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary in the Lake Shore PenthouseBy late May, the transformation of their lives was complete.

The private master suite on the top floor of the Moretti penthouse had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and light.

The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the lake, while fresh bouquets of white hydrangeas and fragrant magnolias adorned every table.

Baby Thomas was thriving, gaining weight rapidly, his giggles echoing through the sunlit corridors that had once known only cold silence.

And every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, without fail, the long mahogany dining table was filled with family.

Don Carmine Falcone would sit at the head of the table, laughing as he carved the prime rib, while Mrs. Gable brought platters of handmade pasta and warm sourdough bread from the kitchen.

One sunny Saturday afternoon in June, the air was warm and sweet, carrying the fresh scent of lake water and blooming lilacs.

Maya walked along the stone terrace overlooking the water, wearing an ivory silk blouse and tailored dark trousers, her dark hair dancing in the breeze.

Dante stood by the stone balustrade, wearing an open-collared navy linen shirt, watching the cargo freighters glide across the harbor channel.

When he heard her footsteps on the flagstones, he turned around.

His face lit up with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made her heart race.

He walked across the terrace to meet her, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his solid, warm chest.

He buried his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.

“Vanilla, lake breeze, and clean spring rain,” he murmured against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”

Maya leaned back against his arm, smiling up into his soulful hazel eyes.

“The foundation approved eighty new pediatric grants this morning, Dante,” she whispered.

“And the new container terminal opened without a single hour of delay,” Dante smiled against her cheek. “All thanks to our Executive Trustee.”

“All thanks to a syndicate don who had the good sense to kneel on a banquet floor,” she teased, tracing the rugged line of his jaw.

Dante chuckled—a rich, deep, joyful sound that echoed across the terrace—and tightened his grip around her waist.

He looked down at her, his expression shifting into a register of profound, breathtaking seriousness that made her pulse jump.

“Maya,” he said softly.

“Yes, Dante?”

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather, sliding the chain into her palm.

“Our family is whole, Maya. The fire will never touch us again.”
