Chapter 7 - A Scent of Scorched Cedar and Salt BrothBy noon, the legal and financial destruction of the Laurent dynasty was unfolding across two states with devastating, historic precision.

Inside the federal executive building on Dearborn Street, Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance formally unsealed eighty-four counts of racketeering, commercial wire fraud, and capital arson against Marcus Laurent and his subsidiaries.

Marcus Laurent was denied bail and remanded to maximum security at the federal detention center in Chicago, facing consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.

The offshore accounts in Panama and Zurich were frozen by international court order, with one hundred and forty million dollars in recovered assets transferred directly into the newly chartered Thomas Lin Foundation for Industrial Safety.

Camilla Laurent was stripped of her social board memberships, her designer assets, and her private real estate holdings.

Her three-million-dollar Colombian emerald necklace was permanently assigned to the Northwestern Memorial Pediatric Burn Center, funding free reconstructive surgeries for children of low-income families over the next ten years.

Back at the Moretti estate on Lake Shore Drive, the air was warm, smelling of cedarwood, fresh sourdough bread, and blooming white hydrangeas.

Maya sat in the private master sunroom overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan, wearing an ivory linen blouse and soft trousers, her hand resting comfortably over the baby kicking softly beneath her ribs.

The double French doors clicked open softly.

Dante walked into the room.

He had removed his suit jacket and tie, wearing an unbuttoned white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and remarkably whole.

In his right hand, he carried an antique rosewood jewel box bound with gold wire.

He sat on the leather ottoman beside her chaise lounge, placing the box onto her lap.

“What is this, Dante?” Maya asked softly, her eyes dancing with curiosity.

“Open it, Maya,” he smiled gently.

Maya opened the lid.

Inside lay an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, seven-carat cushion-cut royal blue sapphire cradled by two delicate swallows carved from white gold—the ancient symbol of truth, loyalty, and safe return home.

“This belonged to my mother, Donna Maria Moretti,” Dante said softly, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook her entire being. “She told my father that an empire is built on the strength of the woman who guards the hearth.”

He took her left hand into his massive, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.

“Maya Lin,” Dante said, his hazel eyes searching hers with fierce, unyielding devotion. “Eight years ago, you walked into a burning building and gave my family its soul back. Yesterday, you stood in a ballroom covered in broth and glass, yet you never let this world tarnish the pure gold of your spirit.”

He lifted the sapphire ring, holding it poised before her trembling finger.

“Will you marry me, Maya? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my empire?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Maya’s lashes, hot against her cheeks.

“Yes,” she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose from the ottoman. “Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!”

Dante swept her up into his arms, lifting her gently against his chest, holding her tight before bringing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed their destiny forever beneath the Chicago sun.

He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the morning light.

Bella and Mrs. Gable cheered loudly from the doorway, clapping with genuine, tearful joy as little baby Thomas gave a firm, joyful kick beneath Dante’s palm.
