Chapter 5 - The Angel in the Linen UniformBy 2:00 AM, the master suite was filled with the gentle, rhythmic sounds of deep sleep.

Bella had curled up on the velvet chaise lounge at the foot of the bed, her small hand clutching the yellow ribbon around her wrist, fast asleep beneath a plush cashmere duvet.

Maya sat propped against the pillows, her hand resting over her sleeping child, watching Dante as he worked at the low cherrywood table by the window.

He had set aside his tactical radios, his focus narrowed entirely to an embossed leather portfolio bearing the golden seal of the State of Illinois.

He stood up, walking across the carpet with quiet, powerful steps, setting the portfolio gently onto her lap.

“What is this, Dante?” Maya asked softly.

“Open it, Maya,” he smiled gently, the hard, dangerous lines of his face melting into warmth.

Maya opened the folder.

Inside lay an official decree from the Cook County Chancery Court:

THE THOMAS AND MAYA LIN MEMORIAL FOUNDATION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WORKERS.

Attached to the decree was the canceled mortgage deed for her late husband's family home in Bridgeport, paid in full in perpetuity, alongside an irrevocable ten-million-dollar healthcare and educational trust established in her unborn child's name.

Tears of pure, disbelieving shock welled in Maya’s eyes, hot against her lashes.

“Dante... ten million dollars? The house in Bridgeport? I am an hourly banquet server!”

Dante knelt beside the bed, his massive hand covering hers where it rested on the heavy parchment.

“You are the woman who walked into hell for my daughter, Maya,” Dante murmured, his voice rich with an unshakeable, eternal sincerity. “Your husband's name has been cleared by the Department of Labor. His pension and death benefits have been restored with full interest. You and your child will never ask for a single dollar from any living man again.”

He looked up into her brown eyes with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.

“In my world, Maya, courage is paid in gold, and truth is answered with an empire.”
