Chapter 11 - The Trial Begins And Vanessa's Mask Cracks Under Cross-Examination

The federal courtroom downtown was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs blinded the corridor as media outlets from across the country swarmed the entrance, eager to cover the sensational downfall of Vanessa Bellini and her corporate conspirators. The once-untouchable socialite, famous for her flawless designer gowns and icy public composure, now sat at the defense table wearing a drab orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back without a trace of makeup.

I sat in the gallery beside Elena and Luca, holding my mother's hand as the prosecution laid out the undeniable mountain of evidence—offshore shell company accounts, illegal medical transfer authorizations, forged psychiatric confinement orders, and audio logs retrieved from Marcus Vance's recovered devices.

When the federal prosecutor called Vanessa to the stand, a heavy hush fell over the courtroom.

Vanessa took the oath with a trembling voice, her arrogant glare finally fractured by raw panic. Under cross-examination, the prosecutor methodically dismantled her defense piece by piece, forcing her to acknowledge the exact dates she ordered Margaret Carter's induced medical crisis and the forged paperwork used to lock Elena away in the Wisconsin sanitarium.

“Mrs. Bellini,” the prosecutor asked sharply, projecting his voice across the silent room, “isn't it true that you orchestrated the entire disappearance of Elena Moretti five years ago simply to seize control of the Moretti family estate and eliminate anyone who knew the truth?”

Vanessa gripped the wooden railing of the witness stand so hard her knuckles turned ghost-white. She glanced desperately toward the gallery, locking eyes with me for a fraction of a second. The cold, venomous hatred in her expression had been replaced by complete, unadulterated defeat.

“I... I did what I had to do,” Vanessa whispered into the microphone, her voice cracking before she buried her face in her cuffed hands and began to weep hysterically.

Judge Miller banged his gavel, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot through the courtroom. “The witness will maintain order. Prosecution, you may proceed.”

I let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last remaining tension leave my shoulders. The web of lies was finally unraveling completely.
