Chapter 6 - The Return To Chicago And The Trap Closing In On Vanessa

The helicopter ride back to Chicago was quiet, save for the steady thrum of the rotor blades cutting through the morning clouds. Elena sat wrapped in a heavy wool blanket across from me, her head resting gently against Luca’s shoulder. Though she was pale and exhausted from years of unlawful confinement, the haunted look in her eyes had begun to fade, replaced by a quiet, fierce resilience.

I sat across the aisle, holding the manila folder containing the medical records of St. Jude's Retreat. Every piece of documentation we needed to strip Vanessa Bellini of her wealth, her social standing, and her freedom was locked inside those pages.

“We touch down in twenty minutes,” Luca said, his voice low and steady as he looked down at Elena. “Once we get you settled in the private penthouse wing with a team of independent doctors, I am heading straight back to the mansion. Vanessa's reign of terror ends today.”

“Be careful, Luca,” Elena murmured, her fingers tightening around his sleeve. “She has influential allies on the city council. People who helped her sweep my disappearance under the rug five years ago.”

“Let them try to help her now,” Luca replied, his dark eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. “The moment I hand these federal wire transfer logs and patient isolation records to the prosecutor, every single one of them goes down with her.”

When the helicopter finally touched down on the private helipad atop the Chicago skyline, an ambulance was waiting to transport Elena directly to a secure medical facility for a complete diagnostic evaluation. Luca insisted that I accompany her to ensure she was safe, while his tactical lead secured the perimeter.

But as I stood by the hospital doors watching Elena get wheeled inside by trusted specialists, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.

It was an unknown number.

I swiped the screen and pressed it to my ear.

“Emily Carter?” a sharp, distorted voice whispered through the receiver. “If you want your mother to see tomorrow's sunrise, you'll walk out of that hospital right now and tell Luca Moretti that the ledger is missing.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?” I gasped, spinning around to look at the busy hospital lobby.

“Check your coat pocket, little maid,” the voice hissed before the line went dead.

My trembling fingers reached into the deep pocket of my wool coat. My fingers brushed against a small, cold object—a brass skeleton key and a handwritten note scrawled in bold, manic handwriting: *“Your mother's oxygen machine has a timer. You have one hour to meet me at the old boathouse, or she suffocates.”*
