Chapter 8 - Breaking Into The Boathouse And The Confrontation With Vanessa's Fixer

The heavy oak doors of the boathouse were chained shut from the inside, but against Luca Moretti's men, old iron was no match. Mateo stepped forward with a heavy hydraulic cutter, snapping the rusted links in a single fluid motion. With a heavy shove, the doors swung inward, releasing a damp cloud of dust, old motor oil, and salt air.
“Clear!” Mateo shouted, sweeping his tactical flashlight across the cavernous lower level filled with old boat hulls and rusted fishing gear.
I rushed in right behind Luca, my eyes scanning the dark corners for any sign of my mother or her medical equipment.
“Over here!” a voice echoed from the upper wooden loft accessible via a rickety flight of stairs.
We rushed up the steps. In the center of the dusty loft sat a portable oxygen machine wired to an auxiliary battery pack. Beside it sat my mother, slumped unconscious in a wheelchair, her breathing shallow and ragged. Standing behind her, holding a heavy-duty industrial wrench against her temple, was a tall man in a tailored gray suit—Marcus Vance, the chief legal counsel for the Bellini family.
“Stop right there, Mr. Moretti!” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with desperate adrenaline. “One step closer, and I pull the oxygen line right out of her throat!”
Luca froze instantly, raising his hands slightly to show he was unarmed, though his eyes burned with a lethal promise. “Let her go, Marcus. You're already facing federal conspiracy charges for the St. Jude's cover-up. Adding kidnapping and attempted murder to your charge sheet is a one-way ticket to a maximum-security penitentiary.”
Marcus laughed hysterically, pressing the wrench harder against my mother's temple. “You think I care about prison? Vanessa promised me a seat on the board and millions in offshore accounts if I cleaned up her messes! You ruined everything, Moretti! And this pathetic maid and her stroke-ridden mother were the weak links that brought down an empire!”
I took a slow, calculated step forward, keeping my voice as calm as possible despite the terror gripping my chest. “Marcus... look at me. Vanessa isn't going to reward you. She's sitting in a cold iron cell right now, and the moment the police find out you were doing her dirty work, she'll throw you under the bus without a second thought.”
Marcus hesitated, his eyes darting toward the open window overlooking the lake.
It was the exact distraction Luca needed.
In a blur of motion, Luca drew a small, suppressed sidearm from his shoulder holster with lightning speed. Before Marcus could even tighten his grip on the wrench, a muffled crack echoed through the loft.
A bullet pierced the wooden beam inches from Marcus's ear, shattering his composure.
Marcus shrieked, dropping the wrench and raising his hands in absolute surrender as Mateo and Dominic tackled him to the floor, slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
I didn't wait to watch them haul him away. I rushed to my mother's side, falling to my knees as I checked her pulse and adjusted her oxygen mask.
“Mom... can you hear me?” I whispered, tears streaming down my face as her eyelids fluttered open.
