Chapter 7 - The Ransom Note And The Race To Save My Mother From The Shadows

Panic clawed at my throat as I stared down at the handwritten note in my hand. The ink was fresh, written on expensive stationery bearing the crest of the Bellini family estate. Vanessa had backup. Someone inside her inner circle—perhaps a corrupted family lawyer or a hired fixer—was still executing her dark endgame.
“Emily? What's wrong? You're as pale as a ghost,” Luca's voice pulled me out of my spiraling terror as he strode back across the pavement from the ambulance bay, his heavy coat billowing behind him.
I didn't hesitate. I thrust the note into his hands.
Luca read the words once, and his expression twisted into a mask of pure fury. The tattoos on his knuckles bulged as his fists clenched with enough force to snap bone.
“She thinks she can still dictate terms from a prison cell,” Luca growled, pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his belt. “Mateo! Track every cellular ping originating within a two-mile radius of the suburban nursing home where Margaret Carter is recovering. Do it now!”
“Luca, we don't have time to trace signals,” I said, my voice shaking as tears welled in my eyes. “The note mentions the old boathouse by Lake Michigan. That's where Vanessa's family used to store contraband before the old man died. It's less than ten minutes away.”
Luca grabbed my shoulders, looking directly into my eyes with absolute, unwavering resolve. “Listen to me, Emily. Your mother protected my wife, and now you are under my protection. Nobody touches your family. We are going to that boathouse, and we are going to tear it down brick by brick if we have to.”
Within minutes, two armored SUVs peeled out of the hospital parking lot, sirens silenced, moving like ghosts through the midday Chicago traffic. My heart hammered against my ribs with every mile we covered. My mother had spent her entire life working herself to the bone to keep our family safe, and now she was paying the price for a secret she had stumbled upon five years ago.
As the gray waters of Lake Michigan came into view through the frost-covered windshield, the weathered wooden structure of the old Bellini boathouse loomed ahead, isolated against the freezing shoreline.
“All units form a perimeter,” Luca barked into the radio as the SUV slammed to a halt in the gravel driveway. “No shots fired unless ordered. Take them alive.”
