Chapter 5 - The Heir’s Betrayal and the Poisoned LedgerBack at the Garden District estate, the atmosphere had shifted from a glittering high-society gala to an interrogation bunker.

Charles and Camilla Dupont were confined to the formal music room under armed guard while federal investigators and financial auditors combed through the household records. Inside the private study, Julian sat behind his massive mahogany desk, pouring over the leather-bound ledger we had recovered from the hidden wall compartment.
I stood quietly near the velvet-curtained window, still wrapped in Julian’s heavy silk-lined cloak, holding a cup of hot black tea a senior housekeeper had quietly brought me.
“Look at this entry, Elena,” Julian said, tapping his finger against a faded page dated November 14, 2013. “Charles didn't just forge my mother’s signature. He utilized a Chicago-based corporate shell called ‘Vanguard Holdings’ to funnel forty million dollars out of our reserve funds right before the harbor blockade.”
“Vanguard Holdings?” I repeated, memory flashing through my mind. “When I worked at the downtown archival library before taking this job, I filed corporate registration forms. Vanguard Holdings was dissolved in 2018, but its primary beneficiary was listed under a trust controlled by Camilla Dupont.”
Julian looked up sharply, a dark, dangerous light flashing in his pale green eyes. “Camilla’s personal trust? Are you certain?”
“Positive,” I nodded, stepping closer to the desk. “I remember filing the duplicate records because the notary signature matched the exact seal Camilla uses on her personal correspondence stationery.”
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, grim smile spreading across his face. “So the dutiful, innocent fiancée was laundering the stolen funds all along. She wasn't just defending her father’s honor tonight; she was protecting her own inheritance.”
Before Julian could pick up his desk phone to notify the federal prosecutor, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open.
Camilla stood in the doorway, her emerald gown stained with dirt from the garden, her hair disheveled, and her eyes wide with unhinged panic. Two armed guards tried to step forward to restrain her, but Julian raised a single hand, motioning for them to stand back.
“Julian,” Camilla breathed, her voice trembling between a sob and a psychotic laugh. “You can’t do this to us. If you destroy my father, you destroy half the shipping infrastructure in the South. The banks will collapse! The municipal bonds will default!”

Julian stood up slowly, towering over her with terrifying calm. “Let them collapse, Camilla. Let every single corrupted brick of your father’s empire burn to the ground. And as for you—you’re going to tell federal investigators why your name is on the Vanguard Trust before my security team escorts you to the parish jail.”
Camilla’s face twisted into an ugly mask of pure venom. She lunged forward with a hidden letter opener from the side table, screaming as she aimed straight for Julian’s chest.
