Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED PEARLS

The silence inside the sprawling master suite was broken only by the frantic sound of trembling breath.

Enzo DeLuca stepped forward from the deep shadows of the mahogany wardrobe.

His custom-tailored obsidian suit jacket caught the pale moonlight filtering through the frost-rimed glass.

Harper Whitcomb shrank back against the carved mahogany bedpost like a wounded animal cornered in a dark alley.

Her fingers clawed desperately at the expensive French lace draping her shoulders.

"Please," she whispered, her voice cracking with a terrifying fragility that grated against Enzo’s hardened nerves.

"Please just let me go."

Enzo narrowed his dark, unblinking eyes, studying her with the detached coldness of a predator evaluating its prey.

"Go?" he echoed, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the quiet room.

"Your father didn't let my brother go when he begged for his life in the mud."

Harper flinched violently at the mention of Nathan, a sharp gasp escaping her pale, chapped lips.

"I didn't know," she sobbed, tears finally breaking free from her long lashes to trace hot tracks down her porcelain cheeks.

"I swear to God, Enzo, I knew nothing about what my father did."

"Ignorance is a luxury of the rich, Mrs. DeLuca," Enzo spat out the title like a foul taste, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides.

"And your family's currency has always been deceit."

He reached out, his large, calloused fingers—stained with the invisible sins of Chicago’s criminal underworld—brushing against her trembling chin.

Harper froze, her breath catching in her throat, her wide blue eyes locked onto his hardened gaze.

She looked so impossibly small beneath his towering frame, a delicate porcelain doll caught in the grip of an iron fist.

"You think I married you for your body?" Enzo murmured, his thumb pressing harshly against her lower lip.

"You think this grand estate and these diamonds were meant to be a reward?"

"No," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the howling wind outside.

"I know... I know you hate me."

"Hate is too simple a word for what I feel when I look at you," Enzo replied, his chest rising and falling with suppressed fury.

"You are Preston Whitcomb’s flesh and blood. Which means you are part of the rot."

He tightened his grip slightly, watching a flicker of genuine terror cross her features, mixed with something else—something dark, desperate, and entirely unreadable.

"Show me," Enzo commanded abruptly, his eyes dropping to the structured bodice of her ruined wedding gown.

Harper’s eyes widened in sudden panic.

She gripped the fabric of her dress defensively across her chest, shaking her head violently.

"No," she whimpered, backing away until the edge of the bed hit the back of her knees.

"Show me what your father made you inherit," Enzo growled, his patience snapping.

With a sudden, violent yank, he gripped the frayed edge of the French lace bodice and ripped it open, tearing the delicate silk apart to expose her skin—and freezing dead in his tracks as a horrific, blood-curdling truth was laid bare before his eyes.
