Chapter 13 - THE RECKONING OF CHICAGO

The sun rose over Lake Michigan the next morning, casting a brilliant, blinding glare across the snow-covered rooftops of Chicago.

The storm had passed, leaving behind a pristine, frozen landscape that masked the violence of the night before.

Inside the grand foyer of the DeLuca estate, the heavy oak doors stood wide open to let in the fresh winter air.

The recessed shadow box above the marble fireplace, which had held the folded black American flag for Nathan, was now empty.

In its place stood a framed photograph of Nathan smiling, his eyes bright and full of life, finally at peace.

Enzo stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the remaining loyal guards secure the perimeter gates.

The federal indictments had hit the news wires at dawn.

Within hours, every corrupt politician, compromised judge, and traitorous capo linked to Preston Whitcomb’s syndicate had been rounded up by federal agents acting on the encrypted data files Harper had transmitted from the boathouse.

The underbelly of Chicago had been thoroughly cleansed in a single, devastating sweep.

Harper walked down the grand staircase, wearing a simple, elegant black silk dress that contrasted sharply with the ruined white lace gown from the night before.

The brutal scars on her collarbone were partially visible, but she no longer kept her chin tucked down in shame; she held her head high, a symbol of survival and absolute triumph.

Enzo turned as she approached, his dark eyes softening noticeably as she came to a stop beside him.

"The federal prosecutor called," Harper announced quietly, a small, genuine smile touching her lips.

"The asset seizure is complete. The Whitcomb estate has been liquidated, and the victims' compensation fund is officially established in Nathan's name."

Enzo reached out, his warm fingers brushing a stray strand of blonde hair away from her cheek.

"You did it," Enzo murmured. "You brought down an empire."

"We brought down an empire," Harper corrected gently, placing her hand over his heart.

"What happens now, Enzo? Now that the war is over?"

May you like

Enzo looked down into her brilliant blue eyes, the last remnants of his cold, merciless facade melting away entirely.

"Now," Enzo said, pulling her gently against his chest, "we start living."
