Chapter 6 - THE LEDGER OF LIES

Harper spun around at the deafening crash of the door, dropping the heavy leather-bound ledger onto the metal desk with a loud clatter.

Her face was deathly pale, her eyes wide with shock as Enzo stepped into the dim light of the boathouse, the barrel of his Beretta locked squarely on her chest.

"So," Enzo’s voice was a low, lethal hum that cut through the howling wind outside.

"The victim act was a masterpiece. How long did it take your father to coach you on those tears?"

Harper raised her hands defensively, backing away until her spine hit the cold steel of the desk.

"Enzo, wait," she breathed, her voice trembling frantically.

"It’s not what you think. I wasn't calling my father—I was calling the federal prosecutor."

"Liar," Enzo spat out, closing the distance between them in three long strides until the cold metal of his gun barrel pressed directly against the center of her collarbone, hovering just above her brutal scars.

"One of your father’s hitmen just confessed before he died," Enzo growled, his eyes burning with a dark, consuming rage.

"He said you are the key to the vault. You’re working with him."

"If I was working with him," Harper yelled over the roar of the wind, her voice suddenly cracking with a fierce, defiant pride that caught Enzo completely off guard, "why would I have given you the location of his offshore backup server?"

Enzo paused, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "What?"

"Look at the screen, Enzo!" Harper gestured frantically toward the green-tinted monitor behind her.

"My father didn't send those men tonight to kill you. He sent them to kill me because I finally decrypted his master file and sent a copy to the FBI and the Chicago Tribune!"

Enzo slowly lowered the gun an inch, his eyes darting toward the glowing monitor.

Lines of financial transactions, encrypted names, and photographs of illicit cargo flashed across the screen in rapid succession.

Among them were names of high-ranking DeLuca capos who had supposedly been loyal to his family for decades—men who had taken bribes to look the other way while Nathan was murdered.

The betrayal cut deeper than any knife.

Nathan hadn't just been killed by Preston Whitcomb; he had been betrayed from within their own inner circle.

"You... you did this?" Enzo murmured, looking back down at Harper with a completely new perspective.

"I’ve spent the last six years planning my father's destruction," Harper whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears as she stepped closer to the gun barrel, letting it rest against her beating heart.

"You wanted revenge for your brother, Enzo. I wanted justice for my mother, whom Preston murdered and covered up as an accident when I was twelve."

The silence in the boathouse grew suffocatingly heavy as the two enemies stared at one another, the lines between predator and prey blurring into absolute nothingness.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden floorboards beneath their feet shuddered violently.

A loud, mechanical click echoed from beneath the desk.

Harper’s face drained of what little color she had left.

"Get down!" she screamed, lunging forward and tackling Enzo to the floor just as a massive explosion tore the boathouse apart from the inside out.
