Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH IN THE ASHES

The penthouse fell into an eerie, suffocating silence, broken only by the howling wind rushing in through the blown-out window.
Harper collapsed onto her hands and knees amidst the broken glass and debris, her shoulders shaking with heavy, wracking sobs.
Enzo stood over her for a long moment, the heavy Beretta still warm in his hand.
Slowly, he knelt down on the glass-strewn floor beside her.
He reached out, his large, calloused hands gently gripping her shoulders and turning her to face him.
"The audio recording," Enzo said quietly, his voice steady.
"How did he get your voice?"
Harper looked up at him through her tears, her hands trembling as she pulled a small, silver flash drive from the hidden lining of her torn wedding gown.
"When I was seventeen... my father recorded hundreds of hours of my voice during therapy sessions he forced me to attend," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"He used AI voice-cloning software to fabricate that entire conversation months ago, anticipating that I would eventually try to bring him down."
Enzo stared at the flash drive in her hand, then looked down at the silvery, brutal scars crossing her collarbone.
Everything suddenly snapped into perfect, undeniable focus.
Preston hadn't just been a criminal; he was a monster who had engineered every single piece of evidence to ensure that even if he fell, he would destroy his own daughter out of spite.
"I'm sorry," Enzo murmured, the words foreign and heavy on his tongue.
"I doubted you."
Harper let out a shaky, watery laugh, shaking her head as she reached up to touch his rugged cheek with her soot-stained hand.
"If you hadn't doubted me, Enzo, you wouldn't have survived tonight," she whispered.
"My father’s capos are still out there," Enzo said, his voice hardening once more as the reality of Chicago's underworld settled back over them.
"With Preston gone, a power vacuum is going to tear this city apart."
"Let them try," Harper said, a fierce, unbreakable light returning to her blue eyes as she stood up alongside him, drawing herself up to her full height.
"We have the master server files. We have the ledger. And we have each other."
Enzo looked at her—really looked at her—not as an enemy, not as a victim, but as a true partner in every sense of the word.
He holstered his weapon, stepping closer and wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her against his chest as the winter blizzard raged outside the broken window.

"Come on, Mrs. DeLuca," Enzo whispered against her hair.
"Let's go home."
