Chapter 3 - THE SCARS OF SILENCE

The jagged lines of raw, silvery scar tissue carved deeply into Harper’s collarbone caught the pale moonlight with terrifying clarity.

Enzo’s breath hitched in his throat, his hand dropping away from her chin as if he had been burned by hot coals.

The scars weren't accidental.

They formed crude, jagged letters across her smooth skin, spelling out words that made his blood run cold: PROPERTY OF PRESTON WHITCOMB.

"What... what is this?" Enzo whispered, the iron-fisted certainty of his vengeance instantly crumbling into total confusion.

Harper pulled the torn remnants of her wedding gown together with trembling fingers, sobbing openly now as she slumped against the bedpost.

"You thought I was a princess living behind iron gates," she choked out, her voice raw with years of buried agony.

"You thought I never labored, never bled, never suffered."

Enzo stood frozen, his mind racing through a dozen impossible scenarios as he stared at the mutilated flesh of the woman he had sworn to destroy.

"Your father did this?" the words scraped against his throat, heavy and unnatural.

"He branded me when I was sixteen," Harper whispered, lifting her tear-stained face to meet his burning gaze without flinching.

"When I refused to sign away my mother’s inheritance to bail out his failing hedge fund, he locked me in the basement for a week and carved his ownership into my skin."

The wind roared outside the window, rattling the glass like skeletal fingers demanding entry.

Downstairs, the heavy footsteps of armed guards patrolling the perimeter echoed faintly through the floorboards.

But inside the master suite, the world had completely stopped spinning.

Enzo felt a sickening lurch in his stomach, a suffocating weight settling over his chest that was far heavier than any grief he had carried for Nathan.

If Preston Whitcomb was capable of mutilating his own flesh and blood with such sadistic cruelty... what else was he capable of?

"Why didn't you run?" Enzo demanded, stepping closer once more, his voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly whisper.

"Where would I run?" Harper laughed bitterly, the sound devoid of all humor.

"Preston owns half the judges in Cook County, and the other half are too terrified of his political connections to look my way. I was his prisoner long before you ever laid eyes on me."

Enzo stared down at her, the cold, calculated mafia boss suddenly realizing he had walked blindfolded into a trap of his own making.

He had thought Harper was the enemy.

Instead, she was just another victim of the man who had murdered his brother.

"He killed Nathan," Enzo stated, testing her reaction, his eyes narrowing as he watched her closely.

"My father didn't just kill Nathan," Harper replied, her voice dropping to a terrifying, deadpan whisper that made the hairs on the back of Enzo's neck stand up.

"He killed your brother because Nathan found out what Preston was really smuggling through those shipping containers at the harbor."

Enzo’s eyes flashed with lethal fury. "What are you talking about?"

"It wasn't financial debt," Harper whispered, leaning forward, her breath ghosting against his chest.

"It was human trafficking. And my father has a ledger containing the names of every prominent politician, judge, and mafia captain in Chicago involved in it."

Before Enzo could process the magnitude of the bomb she had just dropped, a sharp, deafening sound shattered the silence of the night.

A single gunshot rang out from the courtyard below, followed by the frantic shouting of guards and the blaring wail of the estate’s security alarm.
