Chapter 5 - The Heiress's Poisoned LedgerBy 10:00 AM, the atmosphere in the penthouse shifted from domestic warmth back into the lethal precision of a syndicate war room.

Sergei and three senior lieutenants arrived carrying three heavy metallic briefcases.

Vera had been escorted to the playroom in the north wing by Babushka Elena, leaving Nina, Nikolai, and his command council around a massive glass conference table in the private study.

Nikolai had insisted that Nina remain present.

“You are the victim of a conspiracy, and you are the key to its destruction,” Nikolai said, pulling out a leather executive chair for her. “In this room, your voice carries the weight of a queen.”

Sergei opened the center briefcase, revealing a stack of forensic financial reports, decrypted mobile phone logs, and an encrypted thumb drive bearing the crest of the Nevada Gaming Commission.

“Our digital forensics team cracked the hard drive we retrieved from the lead assassin’s vehicle on Tropicana,” Sergei reported, his voice grim. “The hit was funded through an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered to Sterling Aviation LLC—a shell corporation wholly owned by Victoria Sterling.”

Nikolai leaned back in his high-backed chair, his obsidian eyes cold as ice.

“And the cyanide?” Nikolai asked. “Where did she acquire pharmaceutical-grade potassium cyanide six months ago?”

Sergei slid a printed medical manifest across the glass.

“From the private research facility in North Las Vegas funded by her father, Commissioner Harold Sterling. The poison was checked out under the signature of Dr. Marcus Vance—the chief medical liaison for the Gaming Commission.”

Nina leaned forward, her eyes scanning the manifest. Her breath hitched in her throat as she recognized the handwriting.

“Dr. Marcus Vance was the on-duty hematologist who told you to let Vera die that night,” Nina said, her voice trembling with sudden, horrified realization. “He was the one who told me the blood bank was empty!”

Nikolai’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek.

“He told you the blood bank was empty?” Nikolai whispered, each word dropping like an anvil.

“Yes!” Nina exclaimed, her medical indignation blazing to life. “He insisted that the interstate crash had wiped out the regional supply! But when I logged into the central hospital inventory system forty minutes later to audit our units, the database showed two full coolers of B-negative blood in the secondary refrigerated vault on the second floor! Vance had manually locked the refrigerated room from the admin terminal!”

Sergei cursed under his breath in Russian.

Nikolai stood up slowly, towering over the conference table like an ancient avenging god.

“He didn't just want Vera to die of the poison,” Nikolai whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity. “He wanted to ensure that if the cyanide failed to cause immediate arrest, lack of perfusion would finish the job before sunrise.”

He turned to Sergei.

“Where is Dr. Vance right now?”

“He is at the Bellagio executive suites, boss,” Sergei answered. “Preparing for the annual Gaming Commission charity gala tonight. He is scheduled to sit at the head table beside Commissioner Sterling and Victoria.”

Nikolai looked down at the satellite phone resting on the desk.

“Tonight is Victoria’s coronation gala,” Nikolai murmured, a cold, terrifying smile curving his lips. “She believes I am arriving at eight o’clock to announce our formal wedding date and sign over forty percent of the Volkov casino licenses to her father’s oversight board.”

He turned his piercing gaze onto Nina.

“Instead, we are going to present them with a medical bill that will cost them their lives.”
