Chapter 9 - The Syndicate Council ConvenesA suffocating, icy silence settled over the three hundred guests in the Grand Ballroom.

Victoria sprang from her chair, her platinum gown rustling aggressively against the table.
“Nikolai, darling, you have lost your mind!” Victoria shrieked, forcing a high-pitched, manic laugh that rang hollow against the high ceilings. “You’re bringing an unhinged, obscure county nurse into our society gala to cause a scene? Security! Remove this woman from the premises immediately!”
Four armed security guards in Sterling uniform moved forward from the perimeter.
Before they could take two steps, Sergei and eight of Nikolai’s elite tactical enforcers stepped out from the shadows of the banquet hall, their hands resting deliberately on the grips of their concealed weapons.
“Nobody moves,” Nikolai commanded, his voice so quiet, so deadly, that the four Sterling guards froze mid-stride, their hands raised in immediate surrender.
Nikolai looked down at Victoria, his obsidian eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fire.
“Did you honestly believe, Victoria,” Nikolai whispered, “that you could send two armored hit squads to assassinate a pediatric nurse on Tropicana Avenue and that I would not trace the contract back to your private Cayman account?”
A collective gasp echoed across the ballroom.
Two state senators seated near the head table immediately stood up, their faces pale, backing away from the Sterling family as if they were infected with the plague.
Victoria began to tremble violently, her hands clutching the edge of the tablecloth.
“I... I don't know what you're talking about! It was an operational dispute between private security firms! My father’s office handles thousands of transport clearances!”
“It was not an operational dispute,” Nina spoke up, stepping forward into the light of the center chandelier.
Her voice was calm, clear, and resonant with unimpeachable moral authority.
She reached into her small evening clutch and pulled out a certified carbon medical log sheet from the Valley Hospital pediatric intensive care unit, dated June 12th.
She placed the paper directly onto the table in front of Dr. Marcus Vance.
“Read line fourteen, Dr. Vance,” Nina commanded, looking straight into the terrified eyes of the hematologist.
Vance trembled so violently his glasses slipped from his nose, clattering onto the table.
“I... I don't have to read anything...” Vance stammered.
“Read it,” Nikolai growled, his voice dropping into a register that made the crystal pendants overhead vibrate.
Vance swallowed his spit, tears of pure terror leaking from his eyes.
“Line fourteen...” Vance read, his voice breaking into a pathetic whimper. “Patient Vera Volkov. Admitted with acute respiratory failure and cardiac dysrhythmia. Toxicology screening: positive for potassium cyanide metabolites.”
A wave of pure horror swept through the three hundred guests.

Harold Sterling’s jaw dropped. The powerful commissioner looked at his daughter, his eyes widening with the realization that their entire empire was crumbling before his eyes.
“Cyanide...?” Harold whispered, his voice cracking. “Victoria... what did you do?”
