Chapter 6 - A Cold Cup of Chocolate MilkWhile the tactical teams finalized the surveillance assets across the Strip, Nina sat in the penthouse library, trying to process the sheer magnitude of the world she had been thrust into.

She was an ordinary girl from a working-class family in Henderson. Her father had worked thirty years as an electrician for the Hoover Dam, and her mother had taught elementary school. Nina had chosen pediatric nursing because she believed that children deserved a sanctuary from the cruelty of the adult world.
And now, she sat in the fortress of a billionaire syndicate boss, holding the key to the destruction of the state’s most powerful political family.
The heavy oak doors of the library opened softly.
Nikolai walked in, holding a small silver tray with a cup of chamomile tea and a plate of fresh shortbread biscuits.
He set the tray on the side table beside her armchair, then pulled a leather ottoman over and sat down in front of her.
“You are very quiet, Nina,” he said softly, his deep voice stripping away the harshness of the outside world.
Nina looked into her teacup, watching the steam rise.
“I’m just thinking about that night, Nikolai. If I had been two minutes later... if I had listened to Dr. Vance and accepted his authority... Vera wouldn't be playing in the other room.”
Nikolai reached out, his warm, rough hands gently covering hers.
“You didn't listen to him,” Nikolai murmured. “Because you have a soul that recognizes truth. You saw a helpless child and you put your own life on the line without hesitation.”
He looked into her hazel eyes, his gray gaze holding a depth of emotion that made her pulse race against her ribs.
“My world is filled with men who swear oaths of loyalty while hiding knives behind their backs,” Nikolai continued, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur. “Victoria Sterling smiled at my daughter, brought her stuffed animals, and told me she wanted to build a family with me, all while calculating how much blood it would take to secure my casino holdings.”
He lifted her right hand, his thumb gently caressing the needle puncture scar in the crook of her elbow.
“And you gave my daughter life without ever asking for a single dollar.”
Nina’s breath caught in her throat. The heat from his touch spread up her arm, sending a sweet, intoxicating shiver through her chest.
“Nikolai... what happens tonight at the gala?” she whispered. “They are powerful people. Harold Sterling controls the state police, the licensing boards, the courts...”
“Harold Sterling controls men who can be bought with money,” Nikolai replied, his eyes blazing with absolute, unyielding power. “I control the shadows that money cannot reach. Tonight, Victoria and her father will learn that when you attempt to spill Volkov blood, you pay with your entire dynasty.”

He stood up, offering his hand to her.
“Come. It is time to dress for our reception.”
