Chapter 7 - The Poisoner of Elena Moretti

By noon, the full extent of the Bellini conspiracy was laid bare.
Inside the safe deposit box opened by the seventh brass key was not just the dam
bypass codes.
There was a leather-bound diary written in Elena Moretti’s hand.
And a series of laboratory toxicologist reports from seventeen years ago.
Luca sat at his mahogany desk, reading through the yellowed pages.
His eyes were hollow with grief and rising fury.
“My mother didn't die of heart failure,” Luca told Marco and me in a low
whisper.
“Vanessa’s father slipped digitalis into her herbal tea for six months. They
wanted my father to marry Alberto’s sister to merge the syndicates.”
Marco crossed himself, his face darkening.
“Sacrilege. The Commission would execute an entire family for poisoning a
Donna.”
“And they will,” Luca said, shutting the diary with a decisive snap.
“The five families are meeting at the Drake Hotel tonight for the quarterly
council.”

He stood up, his eyes burning with absolute authority.
“We bring the diary. We bring Vanessa. And we bring the six keys.”
