Chapter 13 - A Father's Medical Clearance

Alessio and I walked hand-in-hand down the winding gravel path leading through the estate’s apple orchards. The air smelled of crisp autumn leaves, sweet cider, and woodsmoke drifting from the nearby caretakers’ cottages.
As we walked, Alessio reached into his pocket and handed me a thick, cream-colored document bearing the official seal of the New York State Department of Health.
I unfolded the document, reading the bold, embossed letters at the top:
*THOMAS EVANS — FULL MEDICAL CLEARANCE & LIFETIME HEALTHCARE TRUST.*
“What is this, Alessio?” I asked, looking up at him in awe.
“It’s a fully endowed medical trust,” Alessio explained, stopping beneath the canopy of an ancient golden oak tree. “Ten million dollars placed into an independent trust account under your father’s name. It covers every treatment, every private physician, and every rehabilitation facility he will ever require for the rest of his life, fully managed by an independent medical board.”
Tears pricked my eyes as I stared at the paper. “Alessio... you’ve already given us so much. You gave him a private wing in your home. You saved his life at the clinic.”
“I gave him what he deserved, Nora,” Alessio said softly, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind my ear. “Your father spent twenty years breaking his back in shipping yards so you could grow up with dignity. A man like that should never have to wonder if his next dialysis treatment will bankrupt his daughter.”
He looked into my eyes, his obsidian gaze burning with a vulnerability that few living souls had ever seen.
“When you stood in that dining room last month, holding your torn nametag, refusing to lie about Gia... you taught me something I had forgotten, Nora.”
“What did I teach you?” I whispered, my heart fluttering wildly against my ribs.
“You taught me that true power doesn’t come from fear, or guns, or offshore bank accounts,” Alessio answered, his voice dropping to a tender murmur. “True power comes from the courage to protect those who cannot protect themselves. You gave this house its soul back, Nora. And you gave me my life back.”
I reached up, resting my hand against his warm, chiseled cheek, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his chest.

“You gave me a home, Alessio,” I whispered back. “You showed me that I never have to fight alone again.”
