Chapter 14 - The Return of the Heirloom Sapphire

That evening, a private family dinner was held in the intimate dining salon of the west wing.

There were no fifty capos, no armed guards standing along the perimeter, and no cold syndicate politics.

Around the candlelit table sat those who truly mattered:

My father, looking healthy and content in a soft wool cardigan.

Gia, dressed in an elegant emerald dress, smiling radiantly as she helped Leo cut his roasted chicken.

Leo, wearing his father’s restored silver pocket watch pinned proudly to his vest, chattering happily about his new school and his soccer team.

And at the head of the table sat Alessio.

As the dessert course was served—a delicious warm apple tart that I had insisted on baking myself with the kitchen staff—Alessio stood up, tapping his crystal water glass with a silver spoon.

The table quieted immediately, all eyes turning toward the head of the house.

“Four years ago,” Alessio began, his voice rich and deep, resonating through the warm room, “a terrible darkness fell over this family. We lost Matteo. We lost our compass. And we allowed vipers to whisper in our ears, making us doubt the loyalty of the people who bled for our name.”

He looked at Gia.

“Gia, my dear sister. You bore the weight of that grief with a grace and courage that humbled every man in this syndicate. You raised Matteo’s son into a hero. And tonight, this house formally restores what was stolen from you.”

Alessio reached into his pocket and pulled out an antique velvet box lined with midnight-blue silk.

He opened it to reveal the heirloom sapphire brooch—restored to flawless perfection, its deep blue stone glittering brilliantly beneath the candlelight.

He walked over to Gia, gently pinning the magnificent brooch to the lapel of her emerald dress.

Gia let out a soft, choked sob of overwhelming joy, throwing her arms around Alessio’s neck, hugging him with all the strength in her body.

“Thank you, Alessio,” Gia wept happily. “Thank you for believing in us.”

“Always, Gia,” Alessio whispered, kissing her cheek. “From this day forward, the Morelli matriarchy belongs to the women of honor.”

Then Alessio turned, walking around the table until he stopped directly before my chair.

He reached into his other pocket and pulled out a second velvet box—this one smaller, square, and bound in pure white velvet.

My breath caught in my throat. My heart hammered against my collarbones like a trapped songbird.

Alessio dropped onto one knee on the Persian rug beside my chair.

My father smiled, dabbing his eyes with a linen napkin. Leo gasped in delight, kicking his feet under the table, and Gia clapped her hands together with radiant joy.

Alessio looked up at me, his dark eyes brimming with tears of profound, unconditional devotion.

He opened the white velvet box.

Inside rested a breathtaking, custom-designed engagement ring: a flawless, cushion-cut five-carat royal blue sapphire flanked by two brilliant trillion-cut diamonds, set in an intricate platinum band engraved with ancient ivy leaves—the symbol of everlasting fidelity.

“Nora Evans,” Alessio spoke, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep, so pure, that it shook the foundations of the room. “You walked into my life carrying a feather duster and left carrying the soul of my empire. You bled for my family when you had every reason to walk away. You saved my nephew, you saved my sister, and you saved my heart.”

He took my trembling left hand into his, his fingers warm, gentle, and unyielding.

“Will you marry me, Nora? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the sovereign donna of the Morelli Empire?”

Tears of boundless, radiant happiness poured down my cheeks. I dropped to my knees on the rug beside him, wrapping my arms around his broad shoulders, pressing my face into his neck.

“Yes, Alessio!” I sobbed with all the joy in my soul. “Yes! A thousand times, yes!”

Alessio slid the magnificent sapphire onto my finger—a flawless, perfect fit—and pulled me into a breathtaking, passionate kiss as my father, Gia, and Leo erupted into thunderous, joyous cheers that echoed through the halls of Blackwood Manor.
