Chapter 11 - The Blood Oath of Rome

The Palazzo Colonna in Rome was a monument to three centuries of aristocratic

power, wealth, and corruption.

Its sprawling Great Hall was illuminated by fifty crystal chandeliers, lined

with priceless Roman statues and towering baroque mirrors that reflected three

hundred guests dressed in white tie and couture evening gowns.

Senator Vittorio Castiglione stood at the center of the marble dais, holding a

flute of vintage Franciacorta, laughing heartily with the Minister of Justice

and the Chief of the Roman Carabinieri.

Beside him stood Bianca, radiating cold, arrogant triumph in a shimmering gold

lamé gown, her neck dripping with emeralds. She believed she had won. She

believed Camilla was ashes, the maid was silenced, and the Falcone empire would

be annexed under her family’s control within a month.

At exactly 9:15 PM, Bianca stepped up to the gold-plated podium at the head of

the dais to deliver the opening address.

“Distinguished colleagues, honored guests, and leaders of our great Republic,”

Bianca began, her voice projecting through the high-fidelity sound system with

practiced, seductive charisma. “Tonight, we stand on the threshold of a new era

of security, stability, and unified commerce across the Mediterranean—”

The massive, carved mahogany double doors at the rear of the Great Hall swung

open with a concussive crash that rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead.

The orchestra stopped playing mid-measure. The chatter of three hundred elite

guests died instantly.

Walking down the center aisle of the Palazzo Colonna was Matteo Falcone.

He was magnificent. Dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt

and a black silk bowtie, radiating an aura of terrifying, regal majesty that

parted the sea of politicians and socialites like the waters of the Red Sea.

Behind him marched thirty heavily armed officers of the Italian Carabinieri’s

elite Special Operations Group (GIS)—led not by corrupt syndicate enforcers, but

by General Rossi, the incorruptible head of the Anti-Mafia Directorate.

And walking on Matteo’s arm, her head held high, her emerald gown catching the

light of the chandeliers, was me.

Gasps rippled across the room like a wave of falling dominoes.

Bianca froze at the podium, her lips parted, her microphone amplifying her

sudden, ragged intake of breath.

Senator Castiglione dropped his champagne glass. The crystal shattered against

the marble steps, spilling sparkling wine across the hem of Bianca’s gold gown.

“Matteo...” Bianca whispered into the live microphone, her voice trembling with

sheer, unadulterated horror. “You... you were supposed to be in Sicily...”

Matteo stopped at the base of the raised dais, looking up at his former fiancée

with eyes of absolute, icy contempt.

“The wedding is canceled, Bianca,” Matteo announced, his voice echoing off the

baroque frescoes with the thunder of an iron gavel.

He turned toward me, extending his hand.

I stepped forward to the podium, unclasped my evening clutch, and pulled out the

platinum weeping angel locket.

I handed the locket directly to General Rossi of the Carabinieri.

“General Rossi,” I said, my voice clear, steady, and ringing through the

cavernous hall. “Inside this locket is the digital ledger compiled by Donna

Camilla Falcone before she was abducted five years ago.”

A collective gasp echoed across the three hundred guests.

“It documents sixty million euros in bribes paid by Senator Vittorio

Castiglione,” I continued, pointing an accusing finger at the trembling

politician, “along with the contracts authorizing the bombing of the Falcone

yacht, and the official shipping manifests proving that the Castiglione family

trafficked two hundred migrant children through the Port of Civitavecchia.”

“Lies! Slander! She’s an illiterate servant girl!” Senator Castiglione roared,

lunging forward, his face mottled with purple rage.

General Rossi stepped between them, his sidearm holstered, his face set like

concrete.

“We have already verified the digital signatures on the Swiss servers forty

minutes ago, Senator,” General Rossi said, his voice cold and absolute.

“Vittorio Castiglione. Bianca Castiglione. You are both under arrest for high

treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and crimes against humanity.”
