Chapter 8 - The Platinum Locket’s Secret

The private medical villa in St. Moritz was a secluded alpine fortress

surrounded by ancient pine forests and sheer, snow-draped peaks.

For forty-eight hours, the finest private cardiologists and neurologists in

Switzerland worked around the clock in the villa’s converted master suite.

Camilla had survived the journey across the lake, but the medical consensus was

devastating: the five years of experimental chemical paralysis had caused

irreversible multi-organ failure. Her heart was beating on borrow time; she had

days, perhaps hours, left to live.

Throughout those two days, Matteo never left her side.

He sat in a high-backed armchair beside her bed, holding her frail hand,

speaking to her in low, melodic Sicilian whispers, recounting memories of their

youth in Taormina, the olive harvests, the summer nights on the cliffs before

the syndicate wars consumed their lives.

I remained in the adjoining sitting room, reviewing the digital contents of the

weeping angel locket on an encrypted laptop.

The files were an atomic bomb for the Italian political establishment.

There were over four hundred scanned documents: wire transfer slips from

offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, audio recordings of Senator Vittorio

Castiglione negotiating with human trafficking cartels, and the signed contracts

detailing the assassination attempt on Matteo Falcone’s yacht five years ago.

The bomb hadn't just been intended to kill Camilla; it was intended to wipe out

Matteo as well, leaving Bianca as the sole heiress to the unified

Falcone-Castiglione empire. Matteo had only survived because he had stepped onto

the trailing tender boat five minutes before the detonation to check a

malfunctioning radar unit.

At 3:00 AM on the third night, the door to the master bedroom opened.

Matteo stepped out into the dim sitting room.

He looked hollowed by grief, his dark eyes shadowed by three days without sleep,

but in his posture was an unshakeable, sacred resolve.

“Gina,” Matteo said softly.

I stood up from the desk. “Yes, Mr. Falcone?”

“Camilla wants to speak with you. Alone.”

I blinked in surprise, looking at him. “Alone?”

Matteo nodded slowly, stepping aside to let me pass. “Go to her.”

I walked into the quiet, warm bedroom. The scent of beeswax candles and fresh

pine filled the air, mingling with the faint, sterile smell of oxygen.

Camilla sat propped up against a mountain of down pillows, wearing an ivory silk

bed jacket. Her face was pale as alabaster, but her sea-green eyes were bright,

lucid, and filled with an ethereal, celestial peace.

She patted the edge of the mattress with her frail hand.

“Sit with me, Gina.”

I sat down gently on the edge of the bed, taking her cold fingers into mine.

“Donna Camilla. How are you feeling?”

Camilla smiled faintly, shaking her head. “My race is run, little sister. My

body is tired. But my soul is at peace.”

She reached out, touching the gold wedding band resting on the bedside table

beside her wedding photograph.

“Matteo told me about you,” Camilla said softly, her thumb caressing the back of

my hand. “He told me how you lived in that fortress, how you scrubbed those cold

stones to keep your brother alive. He told me how you stood between me and that

mercenary’s shotgun in the laundry room.”

“I only did what an honorable person would do, Donna Camilla,” I whispered,

tears blurring my vision.

“No, Gina,” Camilla said gently. “You did what an angel would do. In Matteo’s

world, people kill for gold, for territory, for pride. But you bled for loyalty.

You risked your life for the memory of a dead woman you had never met.”

She reached under her pillow and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.

She snapped it open.

Inside was a delicate gold chain holding a pendant shaped like a blooming

Sicilian rose, carved from a single piece of rare red coral.

“This was given to me by Matteo’s mother on our wedding day,” Camilla said,

placing the coral rose into my palm. “It belongs to the mistress of the Falcone

house.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Donna Camilla... I cannot take this. This

belongs to you.”

“It belongs to the woman who will heal my husband’s broken heart,” Camilla

replied, her green eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that pierced through

my very soul.

“Donna Camilla—”

“Listen to me, Gina,” she interrupted softly. “Matteo is a lion. He will tear

Rome to pieces for what they did to me. But after the blood is washed away, he

will be alone in that giant house with only ghosts for company. He needs someone

who knows the value of family. He needs someone who loves with the courage you

possess.”

Tears spilled over my cheeks, dripping onto the coral rose in my hand.

“Promise me, Gina,” Camilla whispered, her breath growing shallow. “Promise me

you will not let the Black Lion die in the dark.”

I looked into her dying, beautiful eyes, feeling the sacred weight of her

blessing settling over my shoulders.

“I promise you, Donna Camilla,” I wept softly. “I will stay by his side.”

Camilla smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile of absolute release.

“Thank you, little sister,” she murmured. “Now call my Matteo. It is time for me

to sleep.”
