Chapter 13 - The Shards on the Senate Floor

Forty-eight hours after the arrests at the Palazzo Colonna, the political and

criminal landscape of Italy had been permanently altered.

The Ministry of the Interior was purged of every official loyal to the

Castiglione network. Over forty corrupt politicians, judges, and shipping

magnates were indicted in coordinated dawn raids across Rome, Milan, and Naples.

The private assets of the Castiglione family—including their villas in Tuscany,

their private yachts, and their offshore holdings—were seized and liquidated,

redirected into state funds dedicated to the rehabilitation of victims of human

trafficking.

My brother, Leo, had been granted full, unconditional Italian citizenship by

personal decree of the Prime Minister, his education fully endowed by an

independent trust fund established by the Falcone Foundation.

On a crisp, sunlit afternoon in late November, Matteo and I returned to the

ancestral estate in Sicily.

The autumn storm had passed completely.

The sky above the Tyrrhenian Sea was a brilliant, crystal azure, the

Mediterranean waters shimmering like a carpet of beaten sapphires beneath the

golden Mediterranean sun. The terracotta courtyards were clean, the red clay

washed away, the olive groves fragrant and heavy with fruit.

I walked down the stone steps toward the central fountain where three days ago I

had fallen in the mud.

The fountain had been restored. Its marble basin was filled with clear,

sparkling water, surrounded by pots of blooming white jasmine and fresh

lavender.

Sitting on the edge of the fountain was a brand-new, hand-carved memorial

monument made from white Carrara marble.

Inlaid into the center of the marble were the recovered, polished shards of the

cobalt blue porcelain urn, seamlessly joined together with pure liquid gold

using the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi—celebrating the beauty of what had

been broken and made whole again.

And resting in the center of the golden seam was a small brass plaque:

Camilla Falcone — She Who Revealed the Truth.

I knelt beside the fountain, dipping my fingers into the cool water, whispering

a silent prayer of gratitude to the woman who had given me a future.

Behind me, soft, firm footsteps clicked against the flagstones.

Matteo walked down the terrace steps.

He wore an open-collared white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed,

the dark, suffocating shadow of grief that had haunted him for five years

completely lifted from his brow.

He stopped beside me, resting his warm, strong hand gently on my shoulder.

His touch sent a pleasant, electric warmth through my entire being.

“She loves it, Gina,” Matteo said softly, looking down at the gold-joined

porcelain.

“It’s beautiful, Matteo,” I replied, turning to look up into his dark, handsome

face. “She deserved to be remembered with gold, not mud.”

Matteo looked down at me, his gaze softening into an intensity that made the

breath catch in my throat.

“She told you something in that chalet, didn't she?” Matteo asked gently.

“Before she went to sleep.”

I looked down at the red coral rose resting against my collarbone, my cheeks

warming with a sudden, beautiful blush.

“She told me you were a lion,” I whispered. “And that you shouldn't die in the

dark.”

Matteo smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his entire face,

crinkling the corners of his eyes, erasing every trace of the warlord.

“She was right,” Matteo murmured. “I was dying in the dark for five years, Gina.

Until you slipped in the rain and brought the light back into this house.”
