Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Heartbeat on the MonitorBy late May, the transformation of their lives was complete.

Nora had taken over the executive direction of the family’s philanthropic operations, overseeing forty community centers, healthcare clinics, and trade schools across Illinois and Indiana.
The domestic staff at the Vance fortress had become an extended family, with private living quarters, educational stipends, and fair working hours.
Baby Leo was thriving, gaining weight rapidly, his laughter filling the sunlit corridors that had once known only cold silence.
One sunny Saturday morning, Nora walked into the grand kitchen carrying baby Leo on her hip.
The air was warm, filled with the rich aromas of simmering cinnamon cider, roasting peaches, and fresh sourdough bread.
Mrs. Gable was kneading dough at the marble island with a wide, happy smile, while two young apprentice cooks were chopping fresh herbs.
“Good morning, Donna Sophia,” Mrs. Gable greeted her warmly, wiping flour from her hands. “The fresh strawberries arrived from the Michigan orchards this morning. Don Julian requested his favorite berry tarts for afternoon tea.”
“I’ll help you prepare the berries, Mrs. Gable,” Nora smiled, reaching for an apron.
Mrs. Gable immediately caught her wrist with gentle firmness, tutting softly under her breath.
“You will do no such thing, young lady,” the old cook scolded affectionately. “The Donna of this house does not hull strawberries on a Saturday morning. You have a meeting with the hospital architects in thirty minutes.”
Nora laughed, leaning down to kiss the old woman’s cheek. “You spoil me, Mrs. Gable.”
“You earned every bit of it, child,” she whispered, her eyes twinkling with happy tears. “Now go on. Don Julian is waiting for you in the rose garden.”
Nora walked out through the terrace doors into the estate’s private rose garden.
The gravel paths had been cleared of spring debris, and the early summer roses were blooming in vibrant crimson clusters beneath the morning light.
Julian stood by the marble fountain, holding the leash of a bounding, four-month-old golden retriever puppy that was joyfully chasing dry leaves across the grass.
When the puppy saw Nora, he let out a happy yip and bolted down the path, tumbling straight into her shins, wagging his tail furiously.
Nora knelt down, laughing as the puppy showered baby Leo’s feet with enthusiastic, wet kisses.
Julian walked up, looking down at them with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made her heart race.
“Looks like Barnaby approves of his new nephew,” Julian murmured, extending a hand to pull her up into his arms.
He kissed Leo’s soft cheek, then wrapped his free arm around Nora’s waist, pulling her against his solid, warm chest.
“Vanilla, clean rain, and baby powder,” he murmured against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to wake up to.”
Nora wrapped her arm around his neck, smiling against his cheek.

“Mrs. Gable kicked me out of the kitchen again, Julian.”
“Mrs. Gable is a very wise woman,” he chuckled, his arm resting naturally around her. “And she knows that your hands have far more important work to do.”
