Chapter 4 - The Overhaul Manifest of 1996By 1:30 AM, the blizzard had buried Lake Shore Drive beneath three feet of wind-carved snow.

Inside Julian’s private study, the air was dense with the aroma of strong espresso, dark cedar, and decrypted data drives.

Julian sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing shipping manifests with Dante and his chief forensic auditor, Marcus.

The heavy oak doors clicked open.

Two armed guards entered, carrying an antique brass dispatch box retrieved from Victoria Montgomery’s private suite in the east wing.

“We cracked the secondary lock, Don Julian,” Dante reported, setting the heavy box onto the desk blotter. “Found this concealed behind the wall safe in her dressing room.”

Julian used a tempered steel pick to pop the internal latch.

He lifted the lid.

Inside lay an unredacted dry dock work order dated November 12, 1996, bearing the official stamp of Montgomery Marine Repair.

The line item was written in faded fountain-pen ink:

Fuel line bypass valves replaced with brittle bronze sleeves. Electrical bypass routed to auxiliary bilge pump. Vessel: The Southern Cross (Donna Francesca Vance).

Attached to the work order was an uncashed promissory note for fifteen million dollars, signed by Arthur Montgomery—Victoria’s father—and addressed to the chief engineer who had sabotaged the yacht eighteen years ago.

And beneath the note lay a modern corporate charter:

THE MONTGOMERY-VANCE MARITIME ALLIANCE — 2026.

Transferring seventy percent of Julian’s deep-water container berths in Calumet Harbor to the Montgomery syndicate upon the formal registration of Julian’s marriage to Victoria.

Julian stared at the documents.

The betrayal was older than his own reign.

Arthur Montgomery hadn't just arranged an accidental explosion in 1996. He had systematically slaughtered Julian’s mother to break his father’s will, spending two decades maneuvering his daughter into Julian’s bed so the Montgomery family could permanently swallow the entire Great Lakes logistics network without firing a single bullet.

And when Victoria caught sight of Donna Francesca’s gold medallion pinned inside Nora’s waistband that afternoon, she had tried to force the pregnant girl onto the icy floorboards to trigger a fatal delivery before Julian discovered his sister was alive.

“They didn't just want the shipping berths, boss,” Dante whispered, his hand resting on his weapon. “They wanted the bloodline extinct.”

Julian closed the brass box with a slow, decisive thud.

He rose to his full height, his charcoal tuxedo falling into place with lethal precision.

“Arthur Montgomery is waiting in the grand salon with thirty district capos,” Julian said, his voice flat as an open grave.

“Tell the staff to clear the dessert course. It’s time to deliver the final reckoning.”
