Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Vance Empire

Two months later, the federal trials of Arthur Vance and Camilla Vance concluded with historic, devastating efficiency.
With the recovery of the 1994 ledgers, the digitalis vials, and the encrypted banking manifests from the lockbox, the jury deliberated for less than an hour before returning guilty verdicts on all counts.
Arthur Vance was sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence in Colorado.
Camilla Vance was sentenced to thirty-five years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and corporate extortion.
Their multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical empire, their private luxury penthouses, and their offshore shell corporations were completely liquidated by federal court decree, with eighty percent of the proceeds transferred directly into the Isabella Rossi Pediatric Foundation.
On the afternoon following the sentencing, Matteo took Elena down to the newly restored shipping berths at Pier 22.
The old, neglected warehouses where contraband had once been moved were completely cleared away.
In their place stood a magnificent, state-of-the-art logistics terminal and community center constructed from red brick, polished steel, and expansive glass windows overlooking Lake Michigan.
Above the main entrance, carved in gleaming white Vermont marble, were the words:
THE ISABELLA AND MARIA ROSSI MARITIME LOGISTICS CENTER — WHERE TRUTH IS RESTORED AND COURAGE RULES FOREVER.
Matteo stood beside Elena on the boardwalk, his hand resting gently on her shoulder, while Mrs. Carter held baby Leo in her arms nearby.
“What do you think, Maria?” Matteo asked softly, looking up at the marble inscription.
“It’s beautiful, Matteo,” she whispered, tears of profound peace stinging her eyes. “Our mother would be so proud.”

“She is here, Maria,” Matteo smiled, pulling her close against his side as the warm lake breeze ruffled their hair. “Every time an honest ship sails into this harbor, she will always be here.”
