Chapter 15 - The True Donna of the Rossi Dynasty

Later that evening, after the grand banquet at the Drake Hotel had wound down into soft music, clinking crystal, and joyful laughter, Matteo and Elena stood together on the private master terrace of their Gold Coast mansion.
A gentle summer breeze rustled the sheer curtains behind them, carrying the clean, crisp scent of Lake Michigan and the distant twinkling lights of the Chicago skyline below.
Inside the softly lit salon, Mrs. Carter was sitting by the fire, holding baby Leo in her arms, softly singing an ancient Sicilian lullaby as our little lion slept soundly against her chest.
Matteo held Elena close, his arm wrapped securely around her waist, his chin resting gently on her shoulder.
Elena’s fingers traced the silver crucifix of the rosary hanging from her wrist, the cool metal catching the silver glow of the summer moon.
“Are you tired, Donna Maria?” Matteo whispered into her ear.
Elena leaned back against the broad, solid warmth of his chest, smiling up at the starlit sky, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against her shoulder blades.
She thought of the freezing service corridor, the wet cleaning rag, the threat of loan sharks in Gary, and the moment a man with gray eyes had dropped to his knees to pull his sister from the stone floor.
“Not anymore, Matteo,” she whispered back, turning in his arms to cup his rugged face in her hands. “Tonight, I’m finally home.”
