Chapter 4 - The Tincture in the Vance Ledger

By 1:30 AM, the blizzard had buried the limestone fortress in three feet of fresh snow, howling off Lake Michigan like a pack of wolves.
Inside Matteo’s private study, the air was dense with the aroma of strong espresso, aged leather, and paper.
Matteo sat behind the massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial printouts with Marco and his chief legal counsel, Leo Falcone.
Dante walked into the room carrying a black leather lockbox seized from Camilla Vance’s private suite in the west wing.
“We cracked the digital keypad, boss,” Dante reported, setting the heavy box onto the desk. “Found this hidden beneath her cosmetic drawers.”
Matteo took a slender steel probe from his drawer, popped the inner hinge, and tipped the contents onto the blotter.
Out spilled three antique brown glass vials labeled Digitalis Purpurea — Batch 1994, four forged municipal death certificates, and an unmailed leather ledger stamped with the crest of Vance Pharmaceuticals.
Matteo picked up the ledger, flipping directly to the entries from October 1994.
His eyes tracked the faded ink:
Delivered to private residence, Prairie Avenue: 50ml concentrated digitoxin tincture. Authorization: Arthur Vance. Hand-delivered by Camilla Vance.
Beside the entry was a memo written in Arthur Vance’s personal fountain-pen script:
Donna Isabella’s cardiac failure certified as natural by Dr. Charles. Succession secured under Vance-Rossi logistics merger.
Matteo stared at the ledger.
The betrayal was older than his own reign.
Arthur Vance had poisoned his mother when Matteo was seventeen years old, using the tragedy to force his grieving father into an alliance, grooming Camilla to marry Matteo twenty years later so the Vance dynasty could permanently absorb the Outfit's sixty-billion-dollar maritime distribution corridor.
And to ensure no true heir could ever challenge the inheritance, Camilla had hunted down Donna Isabella’s newborn daughter, forcing her into starvation and debt on the streets of South Chicago.
“She didn't spill wine on Camilla’s dress tonight, did she?” Marco asked quietly.
“No,” Matteo whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal certainty. “Camilla recognized the rosary in Elena’s sleeve three days ago in the scullery. She staged the spill tonight so she could force Elena onto the cold stones and trigger a miscarriage before I discovered the truth.”
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the study.
Marco reached for his sidearm by instinct. “What are your orders, Don Matteo?”
Matteo closed the ledger with a dull, heavy thud that sounded like a coffin lid snapping shut.
He rose to his full height, adjusting his cuffs.

“Arthur Vance is sitting in my dining salon drinking my seventy-year-old scotch,” Matteo said, his gray eyes turning to black ice. “It is time to serve the final course.”
