Chapter 14 - The Silver Crucifix at Sunrise

The morning of the annual gala arrived in a blaze of brilliant, perfect summer sunshine.

The historic Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Chicago was filled to capacity with over five hundred guests.

The soaring gothic arches were decorated with thousands of white lilies, fragrant wisteria, and flickering ivory candles that cast a warm, golden glow across the century-old stained-glass windows.

The pews were filled with the people who truly represented the heartbeat of the new era:

Dockworkers, crane operators, and union members from the Calumet terminals sitting alongside pediatric doctors, nurses, and hospital staff.

Former syndicate captains, wearing clean bespoke tuxedos, sitting respectfully beside childhood educators, community leaders, and charity directors.

At the front of the aisle, standing proudly on his own two feet with his silver-topped cane in his right hand, was Don Carmine Falcone.

Beside him stood Marco as master of ceremonies, looking sharp and proud in his tailored tuxedo.

And standing at the altar, tall, powerful, and magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo with a single white calla lily pinned to his lapel, was Matteo Rossi.

His dark gray eyes were fixed on the grand oak double doors at the back of the nave with undisguised, radiant adoration.

The cathedral organ swelled into a majestic, triumphant march.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Elena walked down the petal-strewn aisle carrying baby Leo in her arms, accompanied by Mrs. Carter, who walked tall, proud, and steady with tears of unbridled joy shining in her eyes.

Elena’s gown was a custom masterpiece of French lace and flowing ivory silk that trailed behind her like sea foam across the red carpet. Around her neck rested the five-carat sapphire necklace, and in her hand she held Donna Isabella’s silver rosary.

When she reached the altar, Matteo stepped forward and took her hand.

His touch was warm, solid, and filled with a reverence that took her breath away.

He looked down at his sister and his nephew, his eyes shining with pure, eternal devotion.

“You take my breath away, Maria,” he whispered, his voice rich and deep with love.

“We’re home, Matteo,” she whispered back, her hazel eyes dancing with radiant joy.

The archbishop raised his hands in blessing over them and the congregation watching with tears of pure happiness.

“We are gathered here today to witness the restoration of a family whose courage defeated the darkness, and whose truth built a sanctuary of life, honor, and healing for an entire city.”

Matteo turned to face the five hundred guests, his resonant baritone echoing through the vaulted stone cathedral.

“Maria is the co-chairperson of the Rossi Maritime Corporation, the trustee of our family’s foundations, and the true Donna of this house. For as long as our ships sail the Great Lakes, her name is our law, her honor is our shield, and her courage is our guide.”

The entire cathedral erupted into thunderous, room-shaking applause that echoed off the vaulted stone arches.

Falcone cheered, wiping tears of pure joy from his cheeks, while Marco raised his hands into the air with a booming shout of triumph.
