Chapter 11 - The Commission at Dawn

At noon, the grand council chamber at the Chicago Yacht Club convened for an extraordinary tribunal of the Midwestern Syndicate.
The circular, wood-paneled amphitheater was filled with fifty syndicate bosses, regional freight directors, and maritime arbiters from four states.
Seated at the center of the high tribunal table was Elder Capo Carmine Barzini—the eighty-year-old titan who had sat at dinner tables with Matteo’s grandfather fifty years ago, leaning upon his carved ivory cane.
Matteo Rossi walked down the central marble aisle, his charcoal three-piece suit immaculate, his posture radiating the absolute, terrifying majesty of a sovereign emperor.
Walking beside him, her arm linked with his, was me.
I wore an elegant, tailored emerald-green silk gown that complemented the antique gold signet ring resting in my pocket, my dark hair swept up into a sophisticated chignon, my posture calm and upright.
And walking proudly behind us, dressed in a sharp three-piece suit, was Luca, carrying the three leather ledgers on a velvet cushion.
Don Carmine Barzini rose to his feet, adjusting his spectacles as he looked down at the documents spread across the tribunal desk.
“Before this council,” Carmine’s deep, resonant voice boomed through the vaulted chamber, “we formally record the final judgment against the House of Vance.”
He pointed to the federal indictments and the original 2019 codicil signed by Antonio Rossi.
“Under the evidence preserved by Salvatore Bellini and delivered by his daughter Chiara, Thomas Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Richard Vance stand convicted of high treason, the murder of Salvatore Bellini, the attempted assassination of Don Matteo Rossi, and the systematic embezzlement of our freight routes.”
Carmine banged his heavy wooden gavel onto the marble block with a thunderous crack.
“The House of Vance is hereby declared *Cancellato*—erased from the commission forever! All shipping terminals, real estate deeds, and commercial charters totaling twelve billion dollars are transferred permanently, unconditionally, and irrevocably to Don Matteo Rossi and Chiara Bellini!”
The entire assembly of fifty syndicate lords stood as one, erupting into a deafening, standing ovation that shook the stained-glass windows of the hall.
Carmine turned his gaze toward me, bowing his silver head in profound, unprecedented reverence.
“And to Miss Chiara Bellini, for her unyielding courage in defending the honor of our founding families and delivering justice to this house, the High Commission decrees lifetime diplomatic immunity, a permanent sovereign pension, and our eternal gratitude.”
I looked out over the sea of powerful men bowing before me, my heart swelling with pride for the humble chef who had taught me that honor is the only currency that never rustles in the wind.

Matteo took my hand, raising it before the assembly, sealing our triumph before the eyes of the world.
