Chapter 9 - Ambush on Lake Shore Drive

The sudden, absolute blackness inside the locomotive maintenance shed triggered immediate, blind panic among Richard Vance’s mercenaries.
“LIGHTS! GET THE EMERGENCY GENERATORS UP!” a voice screamed from the catwalk.
Before the backup relays could engage, Teams Alpha and Bravo detonated three high-explosive breaching charges at the northern rail gates.
The massive corrugated steel doors blew inward with a deafening concussive roar, throwing showers of sparks, twisted metal, and blinding white smoke fifty feet into the air.
Automatic gunfire erupted in a terrifying, continuous hailstorm.
Matteo kicked open the commissary door, surging onto the catwalk with lethal, surgical precision. Through his thermal optics, the mercenaries were glowing orange targets in the dark.
He fired three controlled bursts, eliminating the two machine-gunners on the crane track before they could depress their barrels toward the northern entrance.
Luca moved like a shadow beside him, laying down a devastating wall of suppressive fire that forced the surviving mercenaries to scramble for cover behind the massive steel wheel-trucks of the locomotives.
Richard Vance realized the trap within three seconds.
He didn't try to rally his men. He didn't try to defend the shed.
He scrambled along the elevated crane catwalk toward the southern emergency exit, clutching a heavy leather satchel packed with bearer bonds and an assault rifle in his right hand.
“MERCER! ROSSI!” Richard screamed into the dark, firing wildly behind him as he fled.
“Matteo! He’s heading for the fuel depot!” I shouted through my tactical mic, tracking Richard’s silhouette against the faint moonlight filtering through the shattered skylights.
Matteo sprinted across the metal grating with terrifying speed, vaulting over an overturned tool cart, closing the distance between them like an apex predator hunting down wounded prey.
Richard burst through the southern exit door onto the exterior loading dock, where sixty thousand gallons of industrial diesel fuel were stored in massive vertical tanks beside the rail spurs.
The freezing rain lashed against the metal catwalks as Richard reached the top of the fuel manifold.
He spun around, leveling his assault rifle directly toward the doorway.
Matteo emerged from the smoke.
Richard pulled the trigger.
*CLICK.*
His rifle jammed, a stovepiped casing caught in the ejection port from the continuous firing inside the shed.
Richard cursed, dropping the weapon, drawing a heavy combat blade from his tactical vest, lunging forward with desperate, feral ferocity.
“You destroyed my family, Rossi!” Richard roared, driving the blade downward toward Matteo’s throat.
Matteo didn't flinch. He didn't step back.
He sidestepped the downward thrust with fluid, devastating economy of motion. His left forearm blocked Richard’s wrist, while his right elbow drove upward with concussive, bone-shattering force into Richard’s jaw.
Richard stumbled backward against the iron railing of the fuel tank, blood spraying from his shattered teeth.
Before Richard could recover his balance, Matteo closed the distance, caught Richard by the tactical harness, and slammed him face-first into the cold steel rivets of the diesel tank.
The heavy combat blade clattered harmlessly from Richard’s limp fingers, tumbling thirty feet down into the dark water of the drainage canal below.
Matteo drew his sidearm, pressing the cold, suppressed barrel directly against the base of Richard’s skull.
“Drop to your knees, Richard,” Matteo whispered, his voice slicing through the roar of the rain like a razor blade.
Richard collapsed onto the metal grating, gasping for air, clutching his bleeding face.
From the doorway of the loading dock, Luca and our surviving operators emerged, their weapons raised, surrounding the fuel platform.
I walked onto the catwalk, the wind whipping my dark hair across my face, my hand resting steady on the grip of my Glock.
Richard looked up through swollen, bloodshot eyes, staring at me in sheer, paralyzed disbelief.
“Who... who the hell are you...?” Richard wheezed, spitting blood onto the wet steel.
Matteo stepped back, resting his hand firmly, possessively on my shoulder.
“This is Chiara Bellini,” Matteo announced, his deep baritone echoing across the industrial yard like a bronze bell. “The rightful owner of every rail line, every harbor dock, and every acre of land your family stole over the last five years.”
Matteo looked at Luca.
“Zip-tie him. Secure the bearer bonds. Hand him over to the federal task force alongside his brother and niece.”
As the enforcers dragged the broken commander away into the rain, the distant sirens of federal law enforcement and state police began to wail across the industrial skyline of Gary.
