Chapter 7 - The Alliance Fractures

By 3:30 AM, the grand reception hall of the Rossi estate was empty of guests, but the tension that had gripped the house had only intensified.

The sixteen syndicate commanders had departed into the stormy Chicago night, racing back to their respective territories to fortify their assets before the news of the Vance family’s collapse broke across the morning financial markets.

In the master study, Matteo and I stood before a massive interactive tactical map of the Midwestern shipping corridors displayed across four high-definition monitors.

Luca entered the room, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.

“Boss,” Luca reported, his rugged face tight with grim focus. “We have an intercept from the Vance private security headquarters in Gary, Indiana. Senator Vance’s younger brother, Richard Vance, has refused to acknowledge the council’s verdict.”

“Richard was always the muscle of their family,” Matteo noted, his eyes tracing the glowing red vectors along the southern tip of Lake Michigan. “He spent ten years running private military contractors in the Middle East before taking over their harbor security.”

“He has eighty heavily armed mercenaries mobilized at their private container terminal in Gary,” Luca continued. “And our intelligence indicates that Richard just dispatched three armored pursuit teams to intercept our transport convoy heading toward the federal building downtown.”

“He’s going to attempt an extraction,” I realized aloud, my heart hammering against my ribs. “He wants to break Thomas and Evelyn out before they reach federal custody.”

“He won't reach the federal building,” Matteo said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. “Because Thomas and Evelyn aren't in that transport convoy.”

I looked at him in surprise. “They’re not?”

A dark, brilliant smirk touched Matteo’s lips. “The transport convoy rolling down the expressway is an armored decoy escorted by thirty of our soldiers. Thomas and Evelyn are still in the sub-level bunker beneath our boat house, where they will remain until federal marshals arrive by helicopter at dawn.”

Matteo turned to Luca. “Where is Richard’s primary command post?”

“The Gary rail yard,” Luca answered. “Terminal Four. They’ve fortified the locomotive maintenance shed with heavy machine-gun nests and anti-tank ordnance.”

“Then we don't wait for Richard to realize he’s chasing a decoy,” Matteo commanded, pulling his customized tactical carbine from the gun safe behind the bookshelf. “We hit Terminal Four before sunrise and decapitate their command structure.”

Matteo turned to face me, his expression softening instantly into fierce, protective warmth.

He reached out, his warm hands gently resting on my shoulders.

“Chiara, I want you in the safe room beneath the master suite,” Matteo said softly. “It has independent oxygen filtration, reinforced steel plating, and enough supplies to withstand a two-week siege.”

I looked straight into his obsidian eyes and shook my head without a moment’s hesitation.

“No, Matteo,” I said firmly.

Matteo frowned slightly. “Chiara, Terminal Four is an active war zone. Richard Vance doesn't care about syndicate laws or civilian lives. He will level that rail yard with high explosives if he feels cornered.”

“And I know the layout of Terminal Four better than anyone in this house,” I countered, my voice steady and unwavering. “My father operated the commercial commissary inside that exact locomotive shed for five years before we opened the bistro in Detroit. I know the subterranean steam tunnels, the auxiliary power conduits, and the blind spots in their perimeter fencing.”

Matteo stared at me for three long, breathless seconds. I saw the battle raging within him—the ruthless mafia sovereign who recognized the immense tactical value of my knowledge versus the man who had suddenly found the most precious person in his life and was terrified of seeing her harmed.

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind my ear.

“You truly are Salvatore’s daughter,” Matteo murmured, his eyes glowing with fierce, unyielding pride.

He walked over to the tactical armory locker, pulled out a lightweight carbon-fiber Kevlar vest, and held it out to me.

“Put this on, Chiara,” Matteo commanded gently. “If we are going to war in your father’s old rail yard, we finish it together.”
