Chapter 1 - Total Darkness in the Castellano Estate

The sudden blackout swallowed the magnificent dining room whole, plunging us into a terrifying, suffocating blackness. Only the faint, eerie glow of emergency pathway lights cast long, trembling shadows across the marble columns. Panic rippled through the elite men in tailored suits, a sharp contrast to the cold, dead silence that usually followed a Castellano command. I froze on the cold floor, my hand still buried deep within Zeus's thick, blue-gray fur. The massive pit bull didn't whimper; instead, his body instantly transformed from a relaxed companion into a tightly coiled spring of pure, lethal muscle. A low, vibrating growl ripped from his throat, shaking the floorboards beneath us.
"Stay down," Dominic Castellano's voice cut through the darkness, low, urgent, and laced with absolute authority.
I could hear the metallic slide of a heavy firearm being unholstered, the unmistakable sound of death arming itself in the dark. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Six months ago, I was just trying to keep stray rescue dogs calm during thunderstorms; tonight, I was trapped in a Chicago mansion with a powerful mafia boss and the brutal dog trainers who had broken Zeus’s spirit in the first place.
"They're breaching the courtyard doors!" a guard shouted from the far end of the hall, his voice cracking just an octave too high.
Glass shattered—a crisp, explosive sound that triggered instant chaos. Gunshots popped outside, muffled yet distinct, echoing through the sprawling estate. Zeus surged forward, dragging me a few inches across the marble before I managed to get my fingers tangled tighter into his heavy collar.
"Zeus, heel! Stop!" I whispered fiercely, pressing my weight down against his shoulder. "Not yet, big guy. Protect position!"
Dominic materialized beside me like a ghost, his silhouette framed by the flashing amber emergency lights. He looked down at me, his eyes dark and unreadable, assessing not just the dog, but my reaction. Most women would be screaming, weeping, or paralyzed with terror. But I had spent years pulling abused pit bulls out of fighting rings; fear was just another frequency of communication I had learned to tune out.
"Can you control him if they get in?" Dominic demanded, his breath warm against my ear as he knelt beside us.
"Only if you stop treating him like a weapon," I fired back, my voice remarkably steady despite the gunfire drawing closer. "They trained him using pain and isolation. If they use their old triggers, he’ll either shut down completely or attack blindly—and he won't care who is holding the leash."
Dominic didn't argue. In that split second, a profound shift occurred between us. Acknowledging my expertise over his own armed men, he reached out and snapped a heavy leather lead onto Zeus's collar, handing the other end directly to me.

"Keep him alive," Dominic whispered, his hand brushing against mine, leaving a trail of electric heat before he vanished back into the shadows toward the grand staircase. "And I'll make sure you walk out of here breathing."
Heavy boots slammed against the outer hallway floor. The intruders had breached the inner sanctum.
