Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

The heavy oak doors of the dining room blew inward with a deafening crash, splintering wood flying across the priceless Persian rugs. Three masked figures stepped through the threshold, their tactical gear absorbing the dim emergency lights like hungry voids. Each man carried a suppressed submachine gun, held at the ready, sweeping the room with cold, mechanical efficiency.

I pressed my back against the marble base of a massive pillar, pulling Zeus tightly against my side. My pulse roared in my ears, drowning out the ambient sounds of the mansion. The lead intruder—a towering brute with a jagged scar running down his exposed neck—scanned the room, his eyes instantly locking onto the massive pit bull.

"Well, look who’s still breathing," the scarred man mocked, his voice a gravelly rasp that sounded like grinding stones. "Good dog, Zeus. Remember us? Remember the shock collar, boy?"

Zeus let out a horrific, high-pitched whine that instantly turned into a blood-curdling snarl. His entire body trembled violently, not from fear, but from a terrifying cocktail of rage and deeply ingrained trauma. I felt the old scars beneath his fur contract. Those bastards hadn't just trained him; they had tortured him into becoming a living weapon.

"Don't look at them, Zeus. Look at me," I whispered frantically, pressing my forehead against his massive, warm ear. "Focus on my voice. They have no power here. You are safe."

The intruder laughed, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, raising his weapon toward the pillar where we hid. "Step away from the beast, little waitress. That animal belongs to us. Castellano stole what’s ours, and we’re taking our property back—starting with the dog, and ending with his head."

Before I could blink, a shadow detached itself from the ceiling balcony above. Dominic Castellano dropped silently behind the intruders, moving with the terrifying grace of a true predator. Before the second guard could react, Dominic’s combat knife flashed in the amber light, burying itself deep into the guard's shoulder.

A choked scream was cut short as Dominic swept the man's legs out from under him, slamming him hard onto the marble. Chaos erupted instantly. The scarred leader spun around, firing a wild burst of bullets that chewed into the plaster above our heads. White dust rained down on us like snow.

"Now, Zeus!" I yelled, releasing the safety catch on my grip and giving the dog the release command he desperately needed. "Get them!"

With a roar that shook the very foundation of the estate, Zeus launched himself across the room like a blue-gray missile. He didn't hesitate. He didn't look back. All the months of abuse, confinement, and terror converted into pure, unadulterated vengeance. He slammed directly into the scarred leader's chest, knocking the fully-grown man flat onto his back with bone-crushing force.

The gun flew from the intruder's hands, sliding across the slick floorboards. Zeus pinned the man down instantly, his massive jaws hovering inches from the screaming mercenary's throat, hot breath fogging up the man's terrified face.

"Call them off! Call the damn dog off!" the mercenary shrieked, clawing frantically at the marble tiles.

Dominic stood over them, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek, his espresso eyes burning with absolute ice. He looked down at the trapped man, then slowly turned his gaze toward me, standing amidst the chaos with a calmness that completely redefined everything he thought he knew about women, survival, and control.
