Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

The air in the warehouse instantly turned glacial. Dominic froze dead in his tracks, his weapon trembling slightly as his eyes locked onto his terrified sister. Every single Castellano guard lowered their weapons slowly, trapped in an impossible checkmate.

"Let her go, Salvatore," Dominic’s voice was a low, dangerous growl, trembling with suppressed rage. "This is between you and me. Leave my family out of it."

Rossi laughed hysterically, pressing the barrel harder against Elena's temple. "Family? You think you know what family is, Dominic? You stole my empire, you stole my prize dog, and you brought a stray mutt into my city! You die tonight, and I take over the Castellano legacy brick by brick!"

I slowly crouched down beside Zeus in the deep shadows behind a towering stack of shipping crates. My heart hammered against my ribs like a pneumatic drill, but my mind was ice-cold. I looked down at the massive pit bull, whispering directly into his ear.

"Do you see him, buddy?" I murmured, pointing a single finger toward Rossi under the spotlight. "That's the man who hurt you. That's the man who kept you in a cage. Go get him, Zeus. Quiet. Fast. Take him down."

Zeus didn't bark. He didn't groww a warning.

Like a ghost liberated from hell, the one-hundred-pound blue-nosed pit bull launched himself from the shadows. He moved with blinding, terrifying speed, a streak of gray lightning cutting across the concrete floor.

Before Rossi could even pull the trigger, Zeus slammed directly into his side with the force of a speeding truck. The pistol went flying out of Rossi’s hand, clattering harmlessly across the concrete. Rossi shrieked in absolute terror as Zeus pinned him to the floor, planting two massive paws squarely on the mobster's chest, his razor-sharp teeth bared inches from Rossi's jugular vein.

"Shoot him! Get this demonic beast off me!" Rossi screamed, flailing wildly as he clawed at the concrete.

Dominic didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He rushed forward, untying his sister Elena, pulling her safely behind him, while his guards swarmed the remaining henchmen, disarming and zip-tying them in seconds.

Rossi stared up into Zeus’s glowing, intelligent eyes, trembling so violently his teeth chattered. He looked over at me, standing calmly in the shadows with the leash still looped securely around my wrist.

"Control your dog... please... control your dog," Rossi whimpered pathetically.

I walked slowly out of the shadows into the harsh overhead light, looking down at the broken, pathetic excuse of a mafia boss who had terrorized Chicago for a decade.

"He's not a monster, Mr. Rossi," I said quietly, my voice cutting through the silent warehouse. "He’s just defending his home. And unlike you, he actually knows the meaning of loyalty."

Dominic walked up behind me, wrapping a strong, protective arm around my waist, pulling me securely against his side as the police sirens wailed loudly outside, finally arriving to haul Rossi away for good.
