Chapter 4 - Entering the Lion's Den

The next morning, the Castellano estate looked less like a home and more like a heavily fortified compound. Black-suited guards patrolled the perimeter with assault rifles, and state-of-the-art security cameras hummed silently above every doorway. Yet, inside the massive, sunlit conservatory, everything felt peaceful. Zeus stretched out lazily across a custom orthopedic dog bed I had ordered overnight, chewing happily on an interactive puzzle toy.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, sipping a cup of steaming black coffee, watching the autumn leaves fall across the manicured lawns. Moving into the master wing of the mansion had been disorienting. My tiny studio apartment was filled with cheap cardboard boxes, while here, my bedroom was larger than my entire previous living space, complete with a walk-in closet and a private balcony overlooking the Chicago skyline.
"You're up early," a deep, rich voice murmured from behind me.
I turned to see Dominic walking into the conservatory. He was dressed in a charcoal-grey tailored suit, his jacket slung casually over one shoulder, looking every bit the ruthless mob boss that made city politicians sweat. Yet, the way his expression softened the moment he looked at me told a completely different story.
"Habit from the rescue shelter," I replied, taking another sip of coffee. "Dogs don't sleep in, and neither do I."
Dominic walked over and stood beside me, leaning his hip against the glass pane. The subtle scent of expensive sandalwood and crisp linen washed over me. "How is our boy this morning?"
"He's healing. His cortisol levels are dropping significantly," I smiled, glancing down at Zeus, who gave a happy thump of his tail against the floor. "He trusts his environment now. But... what about Salvatore Rossi?"
Dominic’s posture instantly hardened, the relaxed warmth vanishing, replaced by a cold, calculating fury. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
"Rossi thinks he can muscle in on my territory by targeting my inner circle," Dominic said coldly, his jaw tight. "He sent those trainers to steal Zeus back because Zeus knows too much about Rossi’s illegal fighting rings. When I rescued Zeus from Rossi's compound six months ago, I stole his favorite prize. Now, Rossi wants revenge."
"So I'm a target too," I stated quietly, feeling a cold knot twist in my stomach.
"Which is why you won't leave this estate without an armed escort," Dominic said firmly, turning to face me completely, his dark eyes piercing into mine with absolute intensity. "I don't care how capable you are with animals, Addison. Rossi is a monster. I will not let him touch you."
"I'm not afraid of monsters, Dominic," I met his gaze without flinching, stepping slightly closer. "I've rehabilitated dogs that other people gave up on, dogs that had every reason to tear the world apart. People aren't much different."
Dominic reached out, gently cupping my cheek with his warm palm. His thumb brushed softly across my cheekbone. "You're too brave for your own good, Addison. That's going to get us both killed."
May you like
"Or it's going to keep us alive," I whispered, our faces just inches apart.
The tension between us was thick enough to cut with a knife. For a fleeting second, the entire dangerous, mafia-filled world around us ceased to exist.
