Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Riverfront Warehouse

The Chicago riverfront at 2:00 AM was a bleak, desolate wasteland of rusted shipping containers, flickering halogen streetlights, and the freezing, dark waters of the Chicago River rolling silently beneath the concrete docks. Dominic’s convoy of armored SUVs rolled to a stop fifty yards away from Rossi’s abandoned shipping warehouse.

Inside the lead vehicle, the tension was thick enough to suffocate us. Zeus sat in the backseat between two heavily armed guards, his nose pressed against the glass, letting out low, rumbling huffs. He knew something big was coming.

"Listen to me, Addison," Dominic turned in his passenger seat, his dark eyes burning with fierce urgency as he grabbed my shoulders. "When we breach that warehouse, you stay in this vehicle with Zeus. Do not step out. This is Rossi’s trap, and I won't forgive myself if you get hurt."

"I'm not staying behind, Dominic," I said, my voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unshakable stubbornness that left no room for argument. "Your sister is inside. Zeus is my responsibility. And you need someone watching your six who isn't blinded by blind rage. I'm going with you."

Dominic stared at me for a long, agonizing second, searching my face for any sign of hesitation. Finding none, a grim, admiring smile touched the corner of his lips.

"God help me, you're going to be the death of me," he muttered, handing me a compact, high-grade tactical sidearm. "Can you shoot?"

"I'm an animal behaviorist, Dominic. I know how to handle wild beasts," I replied, checking the magazine with practiced precision. "And Rossi is the wildest beast of all."

We moved out in total silence. A team of ten elite Castellano enforcers fanned out around the perimeter of the sprawling corrugated steel warehouse. Dominic kicked the rusted side door open with a thunderous crash, his weapon raised, storming into the dimly lit, cavernous interior.

I followed right behind him, keeping Zeus tightly leashed at my side. The warehouse was a maze of towering stacks of wooden crates, rusted forklifts, and hanging chains. In the center of the massive room, tied securely to a wooden chair beneath a glaring overhead spotlight, sat Elena Castellano—terrified, bruised, but alive.

And standing right beside her, holding a loaded pistol pressed against her trembling temple, was Salvatore Rossi.

"Drop your weapons, Castellano!" Rossi screamed, his voice echoing off the metal walls like thunder. "Drop them right now, or your precious little sister loses her brains all over this concrete!"
