Chapter 13 - Blood and Ledger LinesThe wind off the harbor was howling at gale force when Dante’s black SUV slipped silently through the perimeter gates of Berth 12. The massive container cranes loomed like skeletal giants against the bruised midnight sky.

Parking behind a stack of twenty-foot steel shipping containers, Dante and his men moved with ruthless, coordinated precision. Within minutes, they had intercepted the corrupt port inspector and Petrov’s local enforcers before they could lock the fraudulent manifests into the main customs database.
I sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, my fingers flying across the encrypted laptop terminal as I overrode the electronic security locks on Container 4B, extracting the original, uncorrupted shipping logs that proved Petrov’s framing attempt.
Suddenly, the passenger-side window shattered into a million tiny glass fragments.
A masked gunman sent by Petrov’s syndicate stepped out from behind a stack of crates, leveling a silenced automatic pistol directly at my chest.
Before I could even draw a breath, a dark, heavy shadow lunged across the console. Dante moved with the terrifying speed of a striking predator. He threw open the driver’s door, tackled the gunman to the wet asphalt, and disarmed him with a single brutal, fluid motion. The pistol clattered across the concrete as Dante pinned the man to the ground with his boot, his knuckles flashing the dark, inked silhouette of the coiled serpent under the halogen lights.

“Tell Viktor,” Dante whispered down into the terrified man’s face, his voice trembling with controlled, lethal fury, “that Boston belongs to its people. And anyone who touches my family pays in full.”
Within ten minutes, the fraudulent containers were secured, the corrupted digital files were permanently wiped from the municipal server, and federal customs investigators arrived only to find a neatly filed package containing undeniable proof of Petrov’s smuggling attempt waiting on the harbor master’s desk.
